What is an expression?

Predicates are used to refer to the components behind the word "IS" in "IS" sentences, indicating what they are like; they also generally refer to noun predicates and adjective predicates.

In English, it is used to describe the identity, nature, character, characteristics and status of the subject.

Predicates are often served by nouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositional phrases, gerunds, infinitives, and clauses. They are often located in copulas (be, become, appear, seem, look, sound, feel, after words such as get, smell).

Examples of English predicative usage:

Africa is? a big continent. (noun as predicate)

Our next step was? to prepare raw materials. (Infinitive is used as a predicate)

The patient is? in danger. (Prepositional phrase is used as a predicate)

Who's?your?best friend? (Pronoun is used as a predicate)
