Extended data:

The license plate number can be designed by yourself, except for the first two in accordance with national regulations, others can be freely selected. At present, the civil license plate is Type 92, which has been used nationwide since July 1994.

The first place of the license plate is Chinese characters: it represents the provincial administrative region where the vehicle's registered permanent residence is located, and is the abbreviation of each province, municipality directly under the central government and autonomous region.

The second place of the license plate is English letters: it represents the prefecture-level administrative region where the vehicle account is located, and is the letter code of each (prefecture-level city, region, autonomous prefecture and league).

Generally, the provincial vehicle management office ranks according to the local administrative divisions: (the letter "A" is the code of the central city of the provincial capital, capital or municipality directly under the central government, and the following letters are ranked in no particular order).

In principle, for non-optional personalized license plates, the five-digit serial number starts from 00000 (starting from 0000 1 in some areas, unless otherwise specified below), and then it is processed in numerical order until 99999.

Above this number, prefix it with English letters, starting from A0000 to A9999, then B0000 to B9999, and so on to Z9999.

If these 2.6 million numbers are full again, there are two ways to continue numbering. One is to put English letters in the second place, from 0A000 to 0A999, then 1A000 to 1A999, and so on to 9Z999.

The second is that the first two digits are in English letters, from AA000 to AA999, to AB000-AB999, and so on, to AZ999, starting from BA000-BA999 and BB000-BB999, and extending to ZZ999.

If this number is still full, put the English letters in the third place and then in the fourth and fifth places, or continue to arrange them according to the first and third letters, and the first and fourth letters (Guangzhou has recently arranged the second and third letters).

In principle, each prefecture-level administrative division occupies a national license plate code, but each prefecture-level administrative division in the country is divided into different districts, counties and cities. In order to distinguish license plates, different number segments are used.

In addition, it is also a common practice in many places to reserve small numbers with the minimum prefix of 0 for local government agencies within 1000 or within 2000. Guangzhou and Shenzhen in Guangdong even reserve all numbers with the prefix 0 (or 1) for government agencies.

Taxis in many cities also have special prefix segments, most of which use the initial letter T of taxis, and some areas use 8, 9 and so on. X is used first in the two lakes, and a T is added when the digital resources are insufficient.

Taking Hangzhou as an example, "Zhejiang A" is the license code of the vehicle management office of Hangzhou Public Security Bureau. After this coding, the number field starting from 0 is the motor vehicle number plate in the urban area.

1994 when we first changed the license plate, we seriously underestimated the number of motor vehicles today, so we thought that the prefix 0-9 was enough for urban motor vehicles.

At that time, after 60 thousand vehicles were newly licensed, the replacement of old vehicles began with the arrangement of prefix 0. At that time, there were not many private motor vehicles, and the number of prefixes 9 on private cars was also stipulated, which means that the capacity was only 10000.
