China Ocean University evolved from the College of Oceanography and the College of Fisheries of Shandong University.

Shandong University, formerly known as private Qingdao University, was founded in August, 1924. Founder Gao, a native of Shandong, once served as the chief of transportation education, and lived in Qingdao, Shandong. Later, the private Qingdao University was closed, and the National Government established the National Qingdao University on the site of the private Qingdao University. 1932, National Qingdao University was renamed National Shandong University.

Fushan Campus is the seat of the Institute of International Education, and there is no undergraduate education institution. Huangdao Campus is positioned as a coastal experimental base and a maritime testing ground, which supports the innovation and transformation of marine science and technology in the school and is mainly oriented to application rather than teaching.

Laoshan Campus is the new campus and main campus of China Ocean University, with the largest area. Completed in 2005, there are 13 colleges, including the College of Ocean and Atmosphere, the College of Information Science and Engineering, 3 departments and 1 social science department.

Therefore, after coming to China Ocean University, most domestic students will study in Laoshan Campus.
