Whether the antecedent is used by people is who or that

When the antecedent in an attributive clause is a person, you can use who or that, but the two usages are different, as follows:

1. Cases of using that

① In sentences starting with the question word who, such as: Who is the man? that? is shouting there? Who is the man shouting there?

② When the relative pronoun is used as a predicate in a clause, such as: She is not the girl?that?she used to be. She is no longer the same girl as before.

③When the antecedent is modified by the very, the right, the only, such as: This is the very person?that?we are looking for. This is exactly who we are looking for.

2. When using who

①The antecedent is one, ones, anyone, all, none, those, etc., such as: Those who want to go to the cinema will have to wait at the gate of the school. People who want to go to the movies must wait at the school gate.

② There are two attributive clauses in the sentence, one uses that and the other uses who, such as: Who is the boy? that? won the gold medal? Who is the boy who won the gold medal?

③In the there be structure, such as: There are many young men?who?are against him. There are many young people here who are against him.

④In non-limiting attributive clauses, such as: Tom, who is my best friend, has gone abroad to study. Tom is my best friend and he studied abroad.
