The spirit of volunteer service refers to a spiritual manifestation. The spirit of volunteer service can be summarized as: dedication, friendship, mutual help and progress. The proposer was former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, expressing people’s heartfelt praise for volunteer service.

Volunteer spirit is the core of volunteer service. It is formed in the process of long-term volunteer practice activities. It is an organic unity of volunteer service awareness and values, and leads the direction of the development of volunteer service.

“Dedication, friendship, mutual assistance and progress” are the core of volunteer spirit and the key to our understanding of volunteer spirit. If volunteers always consider issues from a utilitarian perspective, volunteer activities will not be carried out and the volunteer spirit will no longer exist. "Friendship" is the value pursuit of volunteer service. It is the basis for the formation of a positive interactive relationship between volunteers and service objects in volunteer activities.

To carry forward the spirit of volunteerism, the key is to implement it

First, adhere to the leadership of the party. Party, government, military and civilian science, east, west, north, south, central, the party leads everything. It is necessary to give full play to the fighting fortress role of grassroots party organizations and the vanguard and exemplary role of party members, give full play to the advantages of grassroots party organizations, make up for the shortcomings of weak social organizations, and pay attention to the role of grassroots party building in voluntary service organizations.

The second is to strengthen system construction. System construction is an important guarantee for realizing the spirit of volunteerism. The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China emphasized: "Improve the voluntary service system and work system." We must establish and improve the institutional mechanism of party committee leadership, government support, and departmental responsibility at all levels, and promote the institutionalization and normalization of voluntary service.
