As the increasingly serious global desertification problem constantly threatens human survival, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 17 as the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought in 1994 (resolution 49/15). On the same day, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification was also adopted. The General Assembly called on Member States to use this World Day to promote public understanding of the need for international cooperation to combat desertification and the effects of drought and to implement the Convention to Combat Desertification.

Overall effectiveness of desertification control in China

According to the National Forestry and Grassland Bureau, at present, the total area of desertified land in China is 26 1. 1.6 million square kilometers, accounting for 27.2% of the national territory.
