National Unified Examination for General College Admissions (Nationwide Unified Examination for Admissions to General Universities and Colleges), referred to as "College Entrance Examination", is a selective examination for qualified high school graduates or candidates with equivalent academic qualifications. There is a unified national examination for admission to ordinary colleges and universities. The Ministry of Education requires that the names of the examination subjects in each province (autonomous region, city) and the national unified examination subject names must be consistent with the national unified examination time schedule.

The candidates for the examination are generally full-time ordinary high school graduates and citizens of the People's Republic of China with equivalent academic qualifications. The admissions are divided into science, industry, agriculture and medicine (including physical education), literature and history (including foreign languages ????and art) Two major categories. Ordinary colleges and universities select candidates based on their scores, plan and expand enrollment in accordance with their admissions regulations, and comprehensively evaluate their moral, intellectual, physical, artistic, and labor requirements. In 2016, the Ministry of Education strictly prohibited the promotion of "college entrance examination champion" and "college entrance examination admission rate", strengthened the management of middle school college entrance examination slogans, and resolutely put an end to any hype about the college entrance examination. On April 7, 2017, the Ministry of Education and the China Disabled Persons' Federation issued a notice on the "Regulations on the Administration of the National Unified Examination for the Admissions of Disabled Persons to General Colleges and Universities." In 2022, the Ministry of Education issued the "Notice of the Ministry of Education on Carrying out the Enrollment of General Colleges and Universities in 2022" which clarified that the 2022 National Unified Examination will be held on June 7.
