The Han Dynasty belonged to Jiangxia County in Jingzhou, which was first divided into Anlu and Shaxian counties; later it was placed in Chaoyang County and renamed Anlu County. In the seventeenth year of Emperor Kaihuang's reign in the Sui Dynasty (597 AD), Chaoyang was renamed Hanjin County; in the second year of Daye (606 AD), Hanjin was renamed Hanyang County. In May 1949, it belonged to Mianyang District. It was changed to Xiaogan Prefecture in 1951, returned to Wuhan City in 1960, and Xiaogan Prefecture again in 1961, and then returned to Wuhan City in 1975.

On September 12, 1992, with the approval of the State Council, Hanyang County was abolished and Caidian District of Wuhan City was established.
