The oldest Yangzhou ancient canal culture
The canal has nurtured Yangzhou and is the "root" of Yangzhou. Yangzhou, as a "city of canals", should vigorously develop and utilize canal cultural resources in the new century, and make the ancient canal culture make positive contributions to Yangzhou's economic development and social progress through tourism.
Yangzhou section of the ancient canal is the oldest section of the whole canal. At present, Yangzhou's canals are mostly consistent with the route of Guhangou more than 2,000 years ago, and completely consistent with the canals dug in Yang Di, with a total length of125km from Guazhou to Baoying. Among them, the Yangzhou section of the ancient canal is about 30 kilometers long from Guazhou to Wantou, which constitutes the famous "Three Bays in Yangzhou". This section of the canal is the oldest, with numerous historical sites and cultural landscapes.
The Grand Canal is the longest man-made river in the world, starting from Tongzhou in the north and reaching Hangzhou in the south. It started in the Spring and Autumn Period, became in the Sui Dynasty, flourished in the Tang and Song Dynasties, went straight to the Yuan Dynasty, and was dredged in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, connecting six provinces and cities and five major water systems, with a total length of 1700 kilometers. The Grand Canal, which runs through the north and south, has set up a bridge to communicate the Chinese civilization for more than 2,000 years.
The change of Yangzhou city site is closely related to the development of the canal. According to Zuo Zhuan, in 486 BC, "Wu Chenghan, Tong Jianghuai". Fu Cha, the king of Wu, dug a ditch in Yangzhou, which became the beginning of the Grand Canal. Yang Di dug the Grand Canal on a large scale, with Yangzhou as the center, and expanded and connected north and south on the basis of the Han Valley. Hundreds of Japanese monks seeking dharma also landed in Yangzhou, and Arab businessmen such as Persia and Dashi who came to China for trade can be seen everywhere in Yangzhou.
In the Song Dynasty, in order to make Yangzhou City closer to the Canal, in the second year of Jianyan in the Southern Song Dynasty (A.D. 1 128), the "Song Dacheng" was built under Shugang near the Canal. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal reached its peak and its economic function reached an unprecedented level. As a result, great changes have taken place in Yangzhou, with the construction of a new city and the relocation of the city site to the south again, making Yangzhou a metropolis close to the canal and the Yangtze River. In the prosperous period of Kanggan in Qing Dynasty, the development of salt transportation and water transportation made Yangzhou enter its heyday again.
