Q: Many contestants participated in this sculpture creation, all of them are domestic first-class sculptors. In the end, your plan won. Where do you think you won?

Dawn (hereinafter referred to as "Li"): 1966 to 1976 is the heyday, and many statues in China are works of this period. I think when we look back on Mao Zedong as a historical figure of 2 1 century, we should have a new orientation instead of simply repeating the statues during the Cultural Revolution. My PK artists all follow this routine, either the image of Chairman Mao going to Anyuan or the image of Chairman Mao going to Shaoshan. People have seen too many sculptures.

I want to be a great image of Mao Zedong youth, an image spanning the times, which can be left to future generations. When Chinese people look back on the last century in the 265,438+0th century, Mao Zedong is definitely an unavoidable hero. So how to show this hero? Don't repeat others. I just want to create a unique image of Mao Zedong, 1925, young and thinking about the fate of China when Mao Zedong is not lonely.

Q: Why did you choose the node "1925"?

Li: It's simple. Mao Zedong wrote "Qinyuanchun Changsha" at the age of 32 in 1925. This word is the most useful word for making Mao Zedong statue in Orange Island. In "Qinyuanchun Changsha", "Independent cold autumn, Xiangjiang River going north, Orange Island" was named Orange Island. At that time, Mao Zedong, a young man, was unknown. Without a single soldier, you can "ask who is in charge of the ups and downs of the vast earth." This mentality is exactly what I want to show.

Mao Zedong's two most famous poems in his life are Qinyuanchun: Qinyuanchun Changsha and Qinyuanchun Snow. In "Spring and Snow in Qinyuan", he began to "count romantic figures and look at the present". By that time, he had become famous all over the world. The song "Qinyuanchun Changsha" from 65438 to 0925 is a footnote. It is a historical process from "asking who is in charge of ups and downs in the vast land" to "counting romantic figures to see the present" What I want to shape is the footnote of 1925.

When I came up with this idea, I felt that our direction was right, but the charm of Mao Zedong was hard to grasp. Mao Zedong, a young man from 1925, happened to be in his prime. Although he cares about his country and people, he is full of confidence in the future of China. Therefore, his facial expression should be very complicated. We have done a lot of design and perfected it again and again.

I am a native of Hunan, and I have the feeling of shaping the image of Mao Zedong.

Q: You once said that before you were elected, you had an image of Mao Zedong in your mind. Why?

Dawn: This is my Hunan complex. I was born and raised in Hunan. When I was young, I swam in Xiangjiang like Mao Zedong. I have the feeling of shaping the image of Mao Zedong. This platform gave me the most primitive feelings for Mao Zedong and Orange Island.

I think I can understand Mao Zedong, an ambitious young man. When I was a teenager, I worked in a factory in Changsha for 8 years and often went swimming in Xiangjiang River. I feel that I have failed in the Academy of Fine Arts for many years. But I always use my talent to encourage myself. I have faced the Xiangjiang River many times and asked the vast land. I think I understand Mao Zedong in 1925. At that time, he was still unknown. I just want to shape the feeling of going out of Hunan and going to the world.

1925 what is Mao Zedong's ambition? I looked through many books, photos and comments from later generations before I found that feeling. A TV series in Hunan said that Mao Zedong was a politician among poets and a poet among politicians. He used poetry to express his political views and incorporated them into poetry. I will think from this aspect and make this sculpture to reflect his temperament as a poet and politician.

Q: I saw your design drawings before I came here. I think it is a reinterpretation of Mao Zedong, a historical figure in the new period. Many people think that this statue is very popular, which dilutes the political color and increases the artistic color.

Li: Many city leaders in Changsha have seen my design drawings in my studio. They stressed: "We should create an artistic image that is responsible for the times." This sculpture in Orange Island is reserved for the times and future generations. The next generation, the next generation, will know from here that Chairman Mao was such a young man and should learn from him. What we need to do is to be an inspirational youth image.

Composition is risky, so I only sculpt his upper body.

Q: You once said that you should take certain risks in shaping this image. What do you mean by adventure?

Li: It refers to my creative process. I only regard his upper body as a sculpture. In the past, most people carved statues of Mao Zedong. They said that if only the upper body was photographed, Chairman Mao would be drowned in Xiangjiang River. But I think once Mao Zedong returns to the water, he will live. He likes water best. Many folks in Hunan know that Mao Zedong was very old when he returned to Hunan, but when he returned to Xiangjiang River, he was extremely happy. So I only chose the upper body image.

Some people say it's a no-no, because leaders are definitely far-sighted and stand at the highest point! But what I want to show is a young Mao Zedong who has not yet become a leader. I need to go back to his harsh environment at that time to create his image: his eyebrows are slightly wrinkled, and although he has a plan, he doesn't know how many difficulties there are, so I created such an image. I might as well try. Accept it and accept it. Criticize me if you don't accept it. I will accept it, but this is the image I want to create in Mao Zedong.

Q: Is there a precedent for only one huge head portrait?

Li: I tried to show my head. Mao Zedong's spirit is in his mind. Then, we walked into the Mao Zedong Thought Memorial Hall. We want to "stand on the shoulders of giants and continue our revolutionary cause".

At first, I wanted to take the whole orange island as Mao Zedong's shoulder, but after going to the scene many times, I found it impossible, and finally decided to focus on orange island. Create a mountain to highlight the "rise" of Mao Zedong. This idea of "rising" was inspired by the word "Chu" in two songs, Dongfanghong and Liuyang River. In this way, I will shape a mountain.

In the process of writing, I once went to the United States to participate in an activity. At that time, I applied to go to the United States to see Mount Presidential and inspected the size of the site. I also learned about their practices, processes and materials, and I feel very confident. The point of "mountain" coincides with mine. At that time, I thought Americans could put four American presidents on the mountain to "shape the American spirit." Why can't we shape the spirit of Mao Zedong and make a huge head on the mountain? They put on airs on the mountain and carved on the stone mountain. We carve first, then spell.

When I was designing, I integrated the observation deck, memorial hall and memorial statue. In the earliest design, tourists can walk on the shoulders of the sculpture, but later, considering that this is a mountain, steep and dangerous, it is not suitable, and the guardrail is needed to protect the safety of tourists. The guardrail destroys the overall artistry, and finally this design is cancelled.

The carving process is meticulous.

Q: The flowing long hair in this statue looks cool. Why do you want to design like this?

Li: When I was in Guangzhou, I was a big shot. He was a big shot from the early days of the Red Army to Yan 'an, and then he was gradually shortened, so this big shot must be won.

My design has a prototype, which is based on a photo taken by Mao Zedong in Guangzhou 1925. That prototype is more formal because it was taken in a photo studio. I think he's in Orange Island, and he's absolutely untidy, and his long hair is messed up by the wind. I must restore him. This wind is the "independent cold autumn" cold autumn north wind, but also "October wind blowing from the north", which is the wind of Marxist revolution.

Q: I noticed that this sculpture of Mao Zedong is a little frowning. Was this design controversial at that time?

Li: This has caused controversy. We have revised many manuscripts in this place and polished them for a long time. Too many wrinkles, a little scared; If you have no wrinkles at all, you will look cynical. At the beginning of the draft, I designed it to be wrinkled, trying to express the idea of "I want to change the world". However, the creation of public image should be accepted by the public. Later, I accepted everyone's opinions and slowly changed them, depicting his thinking through the expression of micro-wrinkles.

This sculpture, I want to put the pursuit of a generation in it

Q: Your shoulders and chest are very powerful.

Li: There are both his aspirations and his words of "being a hundred-centurion" in "Qinyuanchun Changsha". In fact, this is the ambition of Mao Zedong's generation, asking who is the master of the world. When Mao Zedong pursued the truth, that generation of "Mao Zedong" also pursued the truth.

This sculpture of mine, I want to put the pursuit of a generation into it. "The road is long, Xiu Yuan, Xiu Yuan is Xi, and I will go up and down." I want to integrate the pursuit of Mao Zedong and Cai Hesen's generation into Mao Zedong's sculpture. He is a master of that generation. What you see is the youth art sculpture in Mao Zedong. In fact, this sculpture represents a generation. At present, there is no such memorial hall in Hunan. Qingshuitang, Shaoshan and Normal University are all talking about Mao Zedong.

Q: Have you summarized the stages of creating this sculpture?

Li: This problem has not been solved. This project is carried out simultaneously on three lines: artistic creation, artistic engineering and artistic calculation. Hunan and Changsha really want to turn this sculpture into a century-old project that spans the times. All aspects of the work are done very carefully and the requirements are too high. So I made a small statue of 1: 10, which lasted for 10 months. Like the Long March, I have to grope and deliberate, which is likely to fail, but I am trying to deliberate for art.

I am Party B, but I often quarrel with Party A. We quarrel over work and art. I don't care about my personal name, even if I don't make money, I will fight for this project. This is a sculptor like me's report and account of the times.

Q: What is the biggest difficulty you encountered in the creative process?

Li: At first, the image I chose on 1925 was not accepted. At that time, Mao Zedong was still a little baby fat, much like his mother. I want both appearance and vicissitudes. In the process of editing and creating, the most feared thing is that it is not like. Millions of people have millions of images of Mao Zedong, and I also have my image of Mao Zedong, so we must take good care of them. It was the most distressing at that time.

At that time, I made some small avatars, and I really want to get the approval from them before February 26, 2006. So, I had to basically settle down in June 5438+10, and I couldn't sleep for a while. For example, Mao Zedong hesitated for a long time about the mole on his chin. In 1925, there are no moles in Mao Zedong. General Shao Hua visited in 2007. She thinks that Chairman Mao has a mole in the hearts of ordinary people, so she suggests adding it, which coincides with our views.

I am the dean of administration, and I have to deal with many things. I must give consideration to artistic creation and administrative work. I survived. I would rather not be a dean than a Mao Zedong (sculpture). Such a big project is a blessing for any sculptor who can participate, and it is worthwhile to spend 120% energy to do it.

20 10 in August, the reporter wore a helmet and climbed the scaffold twice to explore the sculpture construction. At that time, the construction was entering the most difficult eye hair installation.

The whole sculpture used more than a dozen stones for the eye part alone, and the heaviest one was 1 ton, which could only be transported to the designated part by tower crane. In sculpture creation, young Mao Zedong's eyes should be able to show the inner world of the characters. How to splice a few cold stones into a "window of the soul" with charm? The workers said that the construction can only be carried out accurately according to the requirements of the drawings, and there can be no mistakes. On August 27th, the author saw at the scene that the person in charge of the development and construction headquarters of Orange Island, which is in charge of supervision, was asking the eyes to be reworked. It is reported that in order to show vivid eyes, this part was required to be reworked several times.

The installation of hair is also one of the difficulties. It is reported that the elegant hair from a distance is actually polished and installed with stones weighing seven or eight hundred kilograms. "One is heavy and the other is hanging without support, so it is necessary to ensure that each boulder can find an independent stress point and ensure that the stone will not fall." Under the high standards of Excellence, it took a long time to install the hair part.

These difficult installation techniques are all completed by skilled stone installers from Fujian. At the peak of the project, there were more than 65,438+000 workers on the scaffolding. They are experienced technical workers, most of whom have more than 10 years of work experience, and some of them have gone to Japan to install Buddha statues.

The author interviewed two workers who are responsible for installing eyes. They told the author that they haven't been back to Fujian for more than a year, and they are eating and living at the construction site. "We all do it according to the drawings and can't make a difference." The old worker said to the author. The younger workers said that they could participate in this project, and they were very excited. "This is a portrait of a great man. How many people in China can do it?
