Peking University school motto

As for the motto of Peking University, at present, there are three formulations of "science, democracy, patriotism and progress" on different occasions, which are easy to appear in newspapers or conferences sponsored by the school; "Diligent, rigorous, realistic and innovative" appeared on the placard in the center of the campus many times; "Tolerance and freedom of thought" is often mentioned by many Peking University students in newspapers or speeches. Plus Professor Wang Yizhen's proposal, there are mainly four formulations. Because I have never been exposed to * * * knowledge, I have not yet formed a clear school motto.

Although "all-embracing, freedom of thought" is a universal academic concept, it is the policy that Cai Yuanpei first explicitly put forward and strongly advocated and resolutely implemented in Peking University. In Peking University, an atmosphere has been created, forming a cultural atmosphere and an academic atmosphere, which is extremely conducive to academic prosperity and talent growth. This is the most distinctive and effective policy of Peking University, which has formed the basic tradition of Peking University and is still a lingering force. When many people set foot on the campus of Peking University, once they come into contact with the elegance and achievements of the older generation of scholars, or go into the library to taste the spiritual food here, or even taste the historical charm of the Red Mansion or the unnamed lake, they will have a special impression. Sometimes, something that "Peking University is Peking University" can only be understood but not expressed. This is the atmosphere of cultural tolerance and academic freedom. As the school motto, "inclusiveness and freedom of thought" is the best embodiment of this feature of Peking University.

The policy of "tolerance and freedom of thought" has played a very important role in promoting academic contention, encouraging scientific innovation and exploring truth. Taking "inclusiveness and freedom of thought" as the motto of Peking University can show the spirit of Peking University people who are academic-oriented, good at comprehensive innovation, brave in exploration and pursuit of truth.
