Zhang Jiao in "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms" was like a divine help. Why did he lose in the end? How did he die in the end?

Two explanations.

1. Zhang Jiao became ill due to overwork. He suddenly commanded millions of people and did not have the ability, so he naturally died quickly.

2. Zhang Jiao can also be said to have suffered evil retribution, and was killed by a thunderbolt himself.

Zhang Jiao (Chapter 2): The Yellow Turban Rebellion. Dong Zhuo attacked Zhang Jue, but Dong Zhuo was defeated repeatedly. The court asked Huangfu Song to replace Dong Zhuo. Zhang Jue was already dead when Huangfu Song arrived.

It is probably because Zhang Jiao once said when he met an old Nanhua immortal who taught him the "Essential Art of Peace": "If you have a different mind, you will be rewarded with evil." Seeing that Zhang Jiao became more powerful, he started to have different thoughts. Then he died immediately.
