1926, the Duan government ordered the military and police ambushing in the executive government to disperse the "National Congress against the ultimatum of the Eight Powers" by force, resulting in the tragedy that 47 people were killed on the spot and more than 200 people were injured. Liu Hezhen and Yang Dequn, students of Beijing Women's Normal University, are famous people among the dead. Li Dazhao and Chen Qiaonian were also injured. Later, when the military police cleaned up the scene, they even plundered the property of the deceased and even stripped off all his clothes.
On March 23, people from all walks of life, social organizations and schools in Beijing gathered in the playground of Peking University to hold the "318 memorial meeting for the victims". Lu Xun wrote an elegiac couplet: "It's okay to die, what should I do if I live?" After that, he wrote seven articles about this tragedy. Elegy written by Liu Bannong and composed by Zhao Yuanren has spread all over Beijing. This incident directly led to the collapse of Duan government.
After attending Liu Hezhen's memorial service, Mr. Lu Xun wrote an article in memory of Mr. Liu Hezhen, a kind student who always smiled, mourning "China youth who died for China" and praising "brave and fearless China women".
Extended data:
In this article, Lu Xun mourned Liu Hezhen and other martyrs, profoundly exposed the heinous crime of imperialism and feudal warlords colluding to slaughter patriots, strongly condemned the despicable behavior of the accomplice literati, enthusiastically praised the indomitable spirit of women in China, and inspired revolutionaries to continue fighting.
Therefore, this article is not a general mourning article, but a solemn and stirring battle song praising "China youth who died for China", a battle slogan against imperialism and its lackeys, and a revolutionary horn that inspires young people to fight bravely.
In the wanted voice of Duan reactionary government, Lu Xun was not afraid of sacrifice, and resolutely stood on the patriotic side. He wrote this article and a series of essays about the "March 18th" tragedy with the greatest indignation, which exposed the inferior cruelty of reactionaries, inspired the revolutionary masses to fight and played a great role in fighting.
