Yuhuatai Martyrs Monument

The Yuhuatai Martyrs Monument is located in the Yuhuatai Scenic Area in Xuanwu District, Nanjing. It was built to remember the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the Anti-Japanese War. The monument is 45.68 meters high and is one of the outstanding representatives of modern Chinese sculpture art.

The Yuhuatai Martyrs Monument was built in 1956. As an important battlefield in the Anti-Japanese War, 170,000 soldiers died for the country here. The monument was planned by Peng Dehuai and built with donations from patriots across the country. It was officially unveiled on November 3, 1958.

The monument consists of three parts: the base, the tower body and the spire. It looks like a vase. There is a meter-high eagle above the vase, symbolizing the heroic and tenacious warrior spirit. The names of 41 anti-Japanese heroes during the Pacific War are engraved on the body of the tower. They all died for the country in the Battle of Yuhuatai. The base is engraved with the seven characters "Yuhuatai Patriotic Soldiers Monument" written by Mao Zedong himself.

Every year on national remembrance days such as Victory Day and National Day, people come here to remember the martyrs, commemorate the heroes, and pay respect to these martyrs who heroically sacrificed their lives for national independence and dignity.
