Detention centers and prisons are places where people are held. What's the difference between them?

Detention center is a place where public security organs detain criminal suspects. The defendant in a criminal case is detained in a detention center before being punished or before the judgment has yet to take effect. Prison is the penalty executing organ of the state, and it is a place for holding and reforming criminals who have been subjected to criminal punishment and whose judgments have taken effect.

Temporary detention center

Detention centers are mainly places where criminal suspects are held. In a simple and popular understanding, a detention center is a place where prisoners are temporarily held. Once the prisoners plead guilty and are sentenced by the court, they will put the convicted criminals in prison and start serving their sentences for many years. The detention center mainly accommodates some people who are detained for a short period of time. Some suspects have just been arrested in the detention center, and the procuratorate has not formally filed a lawsuit with the court.

The ultimate goal of the criminal suspect in the "detention center" is to wait for the result of the court's "judgment". Then leave here and go to another place, that is "prison". Why do many criminal suspects expect to leave the "detention center" soon and be put into "prison" for labor and ideological reform earlier? Mainly because the conditions of "detention center" are more demanding than "prison". It is extremely limited in terms of activity space and diet. And live in this small space for 24 hours. On the prison wall of the "detention center", there are all kinds of "prison rules and discipline" cards. Repeat this discipline between eating and sleeping every day. According to the relevant provisions, any violation will be severely punished.

In terms of catering, as early as the 1980s, any foreign food in a detention center in Northeast China was absolutely forbidden to flow into the prison number (to prevent poisoning). Therefore, all meals are provided by the internal canteen of the detention center. The staple food is mainly corn flour steamed bread, and the non-staple food is mostly cabbage soup or pickles. In case of traditional festivals, flour and rice are the main places around the clock. Non-staple food is accompanied by stir-frying and a small amount of meat. In order to respect the eating habits of ethnic minorities, Hui people mainly use beef and mutton (canned). In the distribution of food, it is absolutely "fair", per capita distribution, and no one can eat more and occupy more. There are two "outdoor" times every day, each time about 40 minutes. The rest of the time waiting for legal proceedings. For example, the criminal investigators of the Public Security Bureau accept the copy of the indictment served by the procuratorate for interrogation, and they are also waiting for the fair judgment of the court. The criminal suspect has no intention of obeying the judgment of this court. They will be taken away from the "detention center" in a short time and put into "prison" for reform. Those who appeal will stay in the "detention center" and wait for the final decision of the higher court.

Prison is the destination of criminals. Once the criminal is convicted by the court, he will be escorted to prison by the police in a police car. Prisoners in prison must work. Every month, the prison gives each prisoner some pocket money to buy some toiletries in the prison canteen, while female prisoners buy physiological supplies. Prisoners can be visited by their families after entering the prison. Criminals who have made outstanding achievements in the reform process can also have their sentences reduced. Therefore, when a prisoner goes to prison, he just wants to be released as soon as possible and start over.

It is worth mentioning that the food standard of "prison" will be much higher than that of detention center. Because your labor and dedication have created economic benefits for the prison, it is reasonable to raise the food standard appropriately. In addition, everyone will be given a certain amount of pocket money every month (for buying toiletries). After dinner, you can watch TV or play poker and other entertainment activities in an organized way within the "stipulated" time. If prisoners suffer from common diseases, such as colds, fever, diarrhea, headaches and skin injuries, they can be diagnosed and treated in prison. A little more serious can also be intravenous drip. And enjoy sick leave and "sick meal" treatment.

Other differences

The competent units are different. The competent unit of the detention center is the public security organ, and the competent organ of the prison is the judicial organ and the prison management organ. Detention centers will be set up at the county, city or above administrative level, but prisons are not available in every county. On the contrary, the state and provinces have set up several prisons in different areas. Therefore, the levels of counties and cities do not correspond. Some counties and cities even have multiple prisons, but only one detention center.

Dress differently. Detention centers usually wear blue or yellow vests all year round. On the other hand, prisons are different. Must wear prison clothes and prison shoes, and distinguish between winter clothes and summer clothes. The clothes are dark blue with white vertical bars.

Foreign exchange is different. During the detention center, because he is a suspect who has not yet been sentenced, he can't see any relatives except his lawyer and letters. However, during the period of serving a sentence, relatives can visit each month, and even some prisons allow telephone calls at a fixed time, and they can also communicate with relatives, so the channels for external communication are unobstructed.

Bullying or not. During the detention center, although it is forbidden to discipline and scold suspects, it is also forbidden to fight and other incidents. However, there are still many cases of abuse and beatings in detention centers. As long as it does not cause serious consequences, the detention center generally does not care. However, in prison, prisoners want to reduce their sentences and usually don't beat and abuse others. After all, once they are dealt with, they will face prisoners who cannot be commuted, suspended or imprisoned for life, and the risk is too great. The prison is also very strict in dealing with acts such as fighting.

Learning opportunities are different. During my stay in the detention center, I didn't have any time and opportunity to learn cultural knowledge and skills except the rights and obligations of criminal suspects and the regulations of the detention center. During his stay in prison, he will have 1 day of study time every week, and the prison will also provide certain skills training for prisoners to help them have a skill and be self-reliant after they are released from prison. Some people are in prison, referring to various exams, while others have studied music, calligraphy and even computers.

Generally speaking, life in detention center and prison is really different. In contrast, although they are all in pain, the prison environment is obviously better than the detention center. I hope every prisoner can leave the prison as soon as possible, reintegrate into this harmonious society and reunite with his family to start a new day.
