Ganzhou ancient city wall has a long history and still plays an important role in flood control. It is also the only brick wall preserved in China in the Song Dynasty.

The ancient city wall of Ganzhou was laid by Lu Guangchou, a Hakka in the late Tang Dynasty. It was a tucheng at that time. Later, Tucheng was washed away by the river. In the Jiayou period of the Northern Song Dynasty (1056- 1063), Kong was appointed as the prefect of Ganzhou and began to build the city wall with bricks.

At present, there are many well-preserved city walls in China, such as Xi 'an, Nanjing, Jingzhou, Shouxian and Anhui. However, the brick walls in these places are all from the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, including the Great Wall in Wan Li. After the establishment of the Ming Dynasty during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang, the founder of the Ming Dynasty, put forward the strategy of "building walls high, accumulating grain widely and slowly claiming the throne" and ordered all states and counties to build city walls.
