What should I do if the expressway encounters heavy rain?

What should I do if the expressway encounters heavy rain?

1. Slow down.

In case of heavy rain at high speed, first of all, slow down the speed and turn the wiper to the maximum swing to prevent the road ahead from being unclear. I believe that when I see this, some riders will definitely ask questions: "What should I do if the traffic police punish me for speeding?"

According to the "Regulations on the Implementation of the Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China", when driving on the expressway, the following provisions shall be observed in case of low visibility meteorological conditions such as fog, rain, snow, dust and hail:

(1) When the visibility is less than 200m, turn on the fog lights, low beam lights, position lights and front and rear position lights, the speed shall not exceed 60km per hour, and keep a distance of more than 100m from the vehicle in front of the same lane.

② When the visibility is less than 100 meters, turn on the fog lights, low beam lights, position lights, front and rear position lights and hazard warning flashlights. The speed shall not exceed 40 kilometers per hour, and keep a distance of more than 50 meters from the car in front of the same lane.

③ When the visibility is less than 50 meters, turn on fog lights, low beam lights, position lights, front and rear position lights and hazard warning flashlights, and the speed shall not exceed 20 kilometers per hour, and leave the expressway from the nearest exit as soon as possible.

2. Choose the right lane

When encountering heavy rain at high speed, you should choose a lane with high terrain and difficult water accumulation. If the expressway section is two lanes, drive in the main lane on the right. If you have three lanes, you will drive in the middle lane. If there is more water in front and it is impossible to avoid wading, choose the side where the water looks shallower to reduce the wading height.

If the water level is deep when wading, close to or higher than the height of the exhaust pipe, it is recommended that riders maintain their cars as soon as possible after the weather clears up, and check whether the oil, gearbox oil and brake oil are deteriorated and whether the chassis is abnormal.

3. Don't turn on the light at will.

You must have noticed that in the above regulations, when the visibility is greater than 100 meters, there is no requirement to turn on the hazard warning flash, which is what we often call "double flashing".

This is because the penetration of double flashes is not as good as fog lights. In the case of good visibility, driving double flashes on the expressway will cause misjudgment to the vehicles behind, and it is impossible to tell which cars are stationary and which cars are moving, which increases the safety hazard.

In addition, when driving in a rainstorm, avoid turning on the headlights. Because the function of high beam is to illuminate a large area in front, the reflection of rain will make the front view more blurred, which is very dangerous in rainy days.

Dispel the fog in advance

On rainy days, the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the car is relatively large, and the car glass can easily condense into water mist, blocking the line of sight. Therefore, riders can open the front windshield to defog when there is water mist on the window, and quickly remove the fog on the glass to prevent the fog from obstructing the line of sight.

5. Don't park in the emergency lane.

When there is a rainstorm on the expressway, many drivers often make a wrong decision, that is, park their cars in the emergency lane and dare not drive.

This is absolutely impossible! Even if the visibility is low due to heavy rain, you can't wait in the emergency lane, because parking in the emergency lane is more dangerous than driving in the rain, and it is likely to rear-end the vehicle, with disastrous consequences.

6. Get off the highway as soon as possible

Although the "Regulations" stipulate that you should leave the expressway as soon as possible when the visibility is less than 50 meters, in practice, as long as there is heavy rain or heavy rain, riders are advised to get off the expressway at the nearest toll station or look for the nearest service area as soon as possible. After all, in this weather condition, one more minute on the highway will be more dangerous, and no one can predict what will happen next.

Finally, I still want to remind everyone that we must always pay attention to the weather before going out and try to avoid getting on the expressway in extreme weather. If you encounter heavy rain at high speed, you must also operate in the above way and deal with it calmly to ensure safety first.
