Zhuhai is located on the coast of Guangdong Province, to the south/west of the Pearl River Estuary, to the north of Macau, opposite Lantau Island in Hong Kong, and not far from where the Pearl River Estuary flows into the South China Sea. Xiangshan Town became an important local salt producing area in the Northern Song Dynasty (960- 1 127), when it was called Xiangshan Salt Factory, and Xiangshan administrative entity continued to consolidate in the Southern Song Dynasty (960-11279), when it was in the AD. More recently, Zhuhai County was founded in 1953, with Xiangshan Town as its location, including Wanshan, Dangan Islands and Sanzao Island. By 1979, there were many smaller islands in the Pearl River Delta, and Zhuhai County became Zhuhai City or Zhuhai City. A year later, the administrative entity became a special economic zone.
