The British businessman Cleveland Bridge Engineering Co., Ltd. of Darlington, County, is responsible for the construction.
The construction of Waibaidu Bridge officially started on August 4, 1906, and was completed on December 29 of the following year. On January 20, 1908, the Ministry of Industry and Industry held a ceremony to open the new bridge to traffic. Waibaidu Bridge was the largest steel bridge in Shanghai at the time and the first steel truss beam in China.
