The name "Shanghai Museum" was written by Chen Yi, the first mayor of Shanghai after the founding of the People's Republic of China.

In the early days of its establishment, it was affiliated to the Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relics Management Committee; in July 1953, it was placed under the leadership of the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Culture; in September 1960, the Municipal Cultural Relics Management Committee and the Shanghai Museum jointly worked together, with two brands , a team; in January 1987, the Shanghai Museum was upgraded to a deputy bureau-level unit; in October 1988, the Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relics Management Committee resumed its independent organizational structure, and the Shanghai Museum was placed under the leadership of the Municipal Cultural Relics Management Committee; in September 2010, Shanghai After the establishment of the Municipal Cultural Relics Bureau, all the administrative units of the former Municipal Cultural Administration Commission were placed under the leadership of the Cultural Relics Bureau except the Shanghai Museum, which was directly under the leadership of the Propaganda Department of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee.

In the early days of the Shanghai Museum (26 photos), the organizational structure of the Shanghai Museum was modeled on the Soviet museum model, adopting a three-department-one-room system, with a storage department, an exhibition department, a group work department, and an office. In 1958, a cultural relics restoration workshop was established; in 1960, a cultural relics protection technology scientific laboratory was established; in June of the same year, the Shanghai Painting and Painting Production Cooperative was merged into the Shanghai Museum, and a calligraphy and painting mounting group was established in the cultural relics restoration workshop. In 1974, in order to strengthen the academic research of the museum, the Exhibition Research Department was established, which consists of five research groups: bronze, ceramics, calligraphy and painting, craftsmanship, display design, and the Archaeological Department. In 1985, each research group was upgraded to a department, and the computer group was upgraded to a laboratory. , and a cultural exchange office was added at the same time. In the past 60 years, the display system of the Shanghai Museum has undergone four major adjustments and modifications. In the early days of the museum's construction, the basic display was divided into ten display rooms according to historical eras, including prehistoric period, Shang Dynasty, Western Zhou Dynasty and modern handicrafts, which concentratedly reflected the overview of the development of Chinese art in past dynasties.

After the museum was moved in 1959, it was arranged according to the stages of social development, with exhibition rooms for primitive society, slave society, early and late feudal society, and modern and modern handicrafts. Since 1966, "0" has been removed from display in the Shanghai Museum. Business activities resumed in 1972, and the comprehensive display was changed to thematic display. Four thematic displays including bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy and painting, and ancient sculptures were successively established, with more than 1,400 exhibits and a display area of ??3,400 square meters.
