Li Gongpu’s life story
In November 1940, Shen Junru telegraphed an invitation to Li Gongpu to return to Chongqing to discuss preparations for the establishment of the China Democratic League and other matters. After the Wannan Incident, Zhou Enlai asked Li Gongpu to go to Yunnan and Myanmar for his safety and gave him travel expenses. Li Gongpu collected a large amount of information reflecting the achievements of the Chinese people in the War of Resistance, and prepared to go to Myanmar to hold an exhibition "The Current Situation of China's War of Resistance Against Japan" to win support from overseas Chinese and people around the world for China's War of Resistance Against Japan. In Kunming, he opened "Beimen Bookstore" and published more than 30 kinds of progressive literary and artistic reading materials in more than two years. He also reprinted Mao Zedong's "On New Democracy" and "On Coalition Government" in an underground printing factory. Zhu De's "On the Battlefield in Liberated Areas" and other books.
In October 1945, Li Gongpu was appointed as the Central Executive Committee member and deputy chairman of the Education Committee of the China Democratic League, and a member of the Central Committee of the Chinese People's Salvation Association. In January 1946, he and Tao Xingzhi co-founded a social university in Chongqing and served as vice president and provost, presiding over school affairs. Li Gongpu organized national crisis education before the Anti-Japanese War, anti-Japanese war education during the Anti-Japanese War, and democratic education after the Anti-Japanese War, and actively participated in the anti-civil war and democracy movements. In May 1946, Li Gongpu came to Kunming from Chongqing. His arrival strengthened the democratic forces in Kunming and aroused panic among the reactionaries. The Central Unification and Military Unification agents posted slogans and spread rumors everywhere, saying that the Democratic League was "colluding" with the Communist Party of China. ", using local forces to seize power, saying that Li Gongpu came to Kunming with a huge sum of money provided by the Communist Party of China to plot a riot. In order to expose the conspiracy of the reactionaries and explain the truth to the general public, the Democratic League branch held a press conference in Kunming. The person in charge of the Democratic League repeatedly stated that the Democratic League is a non-violent revolutionary group that only fights for democracy in a peaceful way and does not assassinate and assassinate people. Violence is firmly opposed by the Democratic League. After the reactionaries' conspiracy was exposed, they spread rumors, slandered and threatened Li Gongpu and others. Li Gongpu didn't take it to heart. He had already put his life and death aside for the cause of China's peace and democracy. At a rally, Li Gongpu said: "Do you want to threaten me with death? People are not afraid of death, so why should they be afraid of death? Today I stepped out with two feet and I am not going to step back again."
At the end of June 1946, the Democratic Alliance and people from all walks of life launched a signature campaign of tens of thousands of people in Kunming, demanding peace. Although the Democratic Alliance has repeatedly claimed that it is not a violent group, it only fights for democracy through peaceful means and opposes assassinations and riots. However, the Nanjing National Government secretly ordered the Kunming Garrison Headquarters, the 13th Gendarmerie Regiment and other agencies: "The Chinese Communist Party deliberately rebelled, and the Democratic League was willing to follow the chaos. In this critical period, these traitors should be dealt with appropriately when necessary." "After receiving the order, Kunming Police Commander-in-Chief Huo Kuizhang drew up a list of arrests and assassinations of the leaders of the Democratic League. Li Gongpu was ranked first, and Wen Yiduo was ranked second. On the evening of July 11, Li Gongpu and his wife were assassinated by Kuomintang agents in Daxingpo, Qingyun Street, on their way back from an outing.
