What is the main point of the hinterland?

Hinterland is the work of Brazilian writer Cunha (1866~ 1909), published in 1902.

Brazilians call China's arid grasslands "hinterland". Farmers and herders there are in the condition of periodic drought and lack of land (the land in inland areas is abundant, but it belongs to big landlords), and frequent hunger forces them to wander around and look for uninhabited land. The first two parts of Cunha's novels describe the natural scenery of the hinterland and the life and labor of local residents. Mainland residents oppressed by ignorance, poverty and heavy labor often vent their dissatisfaction and indignation through religious protests.

Mainland residents seek the ideal of a better life and the promise of revenge against the oppressors on earth in the teachings preached by priests and "good people". In this way, it happened in 1896. At that time, Gonzalo (evangelist), who was keen on religion, established his own "Canudes Republic" in conjunction with mainland residents and resisted government forces for a long time. Later, the uprising was suppressed with extreme cruelty. The third part of Cunha's book describes the uprising of Canudes, which has many tense and dramatic plots. Cunha's writing is a little rough, and some places are not even easy to understand, which strengthens this drama.

Hinterland has a particularly important influence on the later development of Brazilian literature. This work of art is still regarded by the Brazilian people as a great classic of national culture.
