According to reports, Johnson stated in the letter that he learned of the software glitch from the FBI on January 19. Previously, the FBI submitted 384 text messages to the Senate Homeland Security Committee, some of which have recently triggered questions in Congress about how the FBI handled the Hillary Clinton investigation.

Johnson said in the letter, "The lack of records during this period is concerning because, based on other records, it is apparent that Strzok and Page communicated more frequently regarding the investigation during this period." He gave the example of an exchange of information between the two in May 2016, after it became clear that Trump would become the Republican presidential candidate.
