Why did the Hillary Email Investigation lose 5 months of data?
On January 22, a U.S. Republican senator said that the FBI’s technical glitches led to reports on Hillary’s “email scandal” and Trump’s “collusion with Russia”. Five months of text message data between two investigators of "Gate" is missing.
According to reports, Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson (Ron Jophson), chairman of the U.S. Senate Homeland Security Committee, disclosed in a letter on January 20 that due to a malfunction in the FBI’s technical system, it was unable to Save text message contact data between lawyer Lisa Page and agent Peter Strzok from mid-December 2016 to mid-May 2017.
The report stated that both the FBI spokesperson and the US Department of Justice spokesperson declined to comment.
According to reports, Page and Strzok were involved in the Hillary Clinton email investigation, and later briefly participated in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Trump-Russia investigation. . Republicans in the U.S. Congress learned that the two men exchanged "anti-Trump" messages through their work mobile phones, and have since been paying attention to the two men. Republicans said the two called Trump an "idiot" and "abominable person" in text messages, and therefore questioned the FBI's tendency to oppose Trump and "favor" Hillary in the investigation.
After Mueller learned the content of the above text messages, Strzok was transferred to other positions. Page also quit in July after working with Mueller's team for 45 days.
According to reports, Johnson stated in the letter that he learned of the software glitch from the FBI on January 19. Previously, the FBI submitted 384 text messages to the Senate Homeland Security Committee, some of which have recently triggered questions in Congress about how the FBI handled the Hillary Clinton investigation.
Johnson said in the letter, "The lack of records during this period is concerning because, based on other records, it is apparent that Strzok and Page communicated more frequently regarding the investigation during this period." He gave the example of an exchange of information between the two in May 2016, after it became clear that Trump would become the Republican presidential candidate. Sturlock wrote at the time that "the pressure is really starting to end now," and Perry Qi replied "Of course". Johnson said the two men were referring to the investigation into Hillary.
In the letter, Johnson asked the FBI to follow up, provide more details about the "missing records" and tell the committee whether searches of his non-government-issued equipment had been conducted.
