"Never together" or "We didn't get together in the end", which is sad?

I think "we didn't get together in the end" is more sad than "never been together", because "never been together" means that you two have no possibility of being together from the beginning to the end, so it is the result of nature, and "we didn't get together in the end" sounds very sad, maybe it is a very loving little couple at first, and finally it leads to a breakup for some reason.
