Plot introduction:

Concord, Massachusetts during the Civil War. The March family live in an old house. Mr. March followed the army to take care of the wounded, leaving behind his wife and four teenage daughters-Meg, Joe, Bain and Amy. Meg is gentle and graceful and virtuous; Joe is pungent and straightforward, dreaming of becoming a writer; Bain is gentle and quiet, and likes playing the piano.
