I finished reading Ibsen's "The Wild Duck" yesterday, which is his representative work of symbolism. I don't read many works about symbolism, so every time I see some symbolism in a script, I always feel like there's a fog in front of my eyes, making it difficult to see clearly.

Let’s talk about this story. Old Mr. Willy and Mr. Ekdal were in business together. Later something happened. Old Ekdal was imprisoned for cutting down trees, and Old Wei But nothing happened to Mr. Lee. Old Mr. Willy's life was going smoothly, but the Ekdal family lost their family honor and never recovered. This happens before the story begins.

The story begins with a dinner party. Mr. Willy's son Gregers came back from the factory. Mr. Willy invited many guests. Greggs also invited his old friend Hjalmar. Hjalmar is actually the only son of the elder Ekdal. In the subsequent conversation, Gregers learned that Yalma had already married and had children, and he also opened a photo studio. And it all started with the help of old Mr. Willie.

After hearing this, Griggs immediately felt that this was not the case. He hates his father. His father had married his mother for a dowry. Later, after they got married, he found that there was no dowry, so he neglected his mother and even had an affair with the housekeeper. This housekeeper is the wife whom old Mr. Willy arranged to marry Hjalmar. The reason why old Mr. Willy opened a photo studio for Hjalmar was not because he really wanted to help Hjalma, but because the housekeeper Keena Hansen happened to be able to develop photos. And Griggs later discovered that Hjalmar and Keener's daughter was actually his father's illegitimate daughter. He has a passion for "ideal requirements" in his heart, and he wants to expose all this. He wants to "help" Yalma recognize reality, help him build his life and marriage on the basis of "truth", and gain true happiness. .

Gregers knew that his father had called him home this time because he wanted to renew his relationship. He left home and came to Hjalma's home. At this time, the Yalma family is filled with happiness. Although they are poor, they love and trust each other, and they all have their own dream.

The arrival of Griggs broke all this. During the chat, Griggs heard that Yalma was renting a house, so he decided to rent it. Keener was strongly opposed to renting to Griggs. What he said was so strange that even the fourteen-year-old Hetwig felt that there was something in Gregers' words. Hjalma agreed to rent it to Kina despite his objections, and their family's misfortune began.

Old Willie came here to see Griggs once before he left. Because the renewal of the relationship required part of the property to be given to the children, Griggs refused to accept his property.

Later Mrs. Soapy, the wife of old Mr. Willie, came to see Keener before leaving. And gave Hetwig a letter as her birthday present. It says that Mr. Ekdal can get one hundred dollars every month from Mr. Willie until the day he dies. The property will be inherited by Heitwig after his death.

Gregers finally told Hjalmar the truth. Hjalmar decided to run away from home and escape everything that old Mr. Willy had arranged for him. Hetwig loved Hjalma very much, and she was willing to give up everything for her father. However, Hjalma's sudden change in his attitude towards her made her feel that the world was dark. Griggs almost fell into madness. He wanted to save his friend Yalma's life according to his "ideal requirements". Unexpectedly, he opened the door to hell for Yalma step by step.

Hjalma ran away from home at his "request", and Griggs also asked Hetwig to kill her beloved "wild duck" to prove her love to Hjalma. As a result, the unfortunate child accidentally killed himself.

The play ends with Hetwig's death.

Gregers has always wanted to "save" his friends. He has a "fanatic" integrity disease, and everything must be built on the basis of truth in order to achieve happiness. But when he reveals the truth, he discovers that's not the case.

Griggs destroyed the illusion of Hjalmar's life and also destroyed his happy life. After reading this play, my deepest feeling is that "like a person drinking water, he knows whether it is warm or cold."

He thought that Yalma's life was unfortunate, so he went to help him change it. He did not consider reality or other people's feelings at all, but just fanatically pursued an "ideal requirement." In the end, he himself was confused. What is his mission as a human being?
