Why should I give a red envelope to celebrate the New Year?

In the custom of Spring Festival in China, the younger generation needs to receive a red envelope to pay a New Year call to the elder, which is the elder's blessing to the younger generation. The amount of New Year's red envelopes varies from place to place because of different customs.

During the Spring Festival, the younger generation pays New Year greetings to the older generation, and the older generation gives the younger generation red envelopes, also known as lucky money.
