According to the analysis, there may be three reasons why Unicom closed the 2G network:

1. In order to transfer spectrum resources, China Unicom will switch the 2G network resources to 4G, which will be beneficial to industrial development.

2. This can greatly reduce the maintenance cost; Thirdly, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a document last year, allowing operators to deploy NB-IoT system in GSM band. Since then, China Mobile has built an NB-IoT network based on 4G in the original 2G band.

therefore, 9Mhz and 18Mhz, where 2G networks are deployed, are regarded as high-quality frequency bands, which are also urgently needed by China Unicom. for these reasons, China Unicom chose to shut down 2G networks.

however, closing 2G is not a domestic precedent, and many foreign operators have closed 2G networks. In the face of a series of actions to shut down 2G networks around the world, it also indicates that 2G communication is slowly withdrawing from the historical stage.
