1. Recognize the faults of the world Avoid troubles and stay away from bad friends and evil Dharma
We are very lucky to have a human body with full time and meet the Buddha Dharma in this life. The first step in learning Buddhism is to recognize the faults in the world, stay away from evil friends and evil dharma, and get closer to good teachers and good friends. Why do you say this? Because people live in groups, they are bound to be affected by the surrounding environment. As the saying goes: "Those who are close to vermillion are red, and those who are close to ink are black." What kind of environment we are in will determine how we are affected. Especially now, in an era where transportation and communications are highly developed, the interactions and connections between people are very close, and the impact of the environment on us can be said to be pervasive. If we cannot correctly understand and stay away from the impure environment, evil friends, and evil dharma in the world, we will easily follow the trend, create bad karma, and fall into evil paths. It will be very difficult to make progress in learning Buddhism. The ancients said, "When you see the wise, think about them." Only by getting close to good teachers and good friends, and working hard to create a learning environment around you, can you start learning Buddhism and make progress step by step and throughout your life.
The first thing that Buddhist practitioners should stay away from is an environment full of material temptations. Being indifferent to material life and being content with few desires are essential and basic prerequisites for practicing Taoism. In fact, if a person does not practice spiritual practice, his heart will definitely be empty. He will often feel bored, hesitant, helpless, irritable, etc., because his heart has no purpose! How to pass the time? They can only use various entertainment activities in secular life to entertain themselves. There are many types of entertainment activities, such as various parties, movies, pop songs, karaoke, video games, etc.
If you envy these things, you will join in the fun. These recreational activities only satisfy people's physiological needs through sensory stimulation. It would be a great pity if Buddhists waste a lot of precious time on this. If you continue like this, you will naturally and unknowingly stay away from the Three Jewels and the Buddha's Dharma. You will waste your free time in your human body and will inevitably create a lot of defilements and degenerate into the lower realms.
In addition, in this era of rapid technological development, newspapers, magazines, television, the Internet, mobile phones and other media are all very developed, and are closely related to our lives. From childhood to adulthood, until old age and death, It is to live in such an atmosphere. Whether we are at home or out, all this information is like air, affecting our ears and eyes all the time. Whether we see or hear, as long as our six sense organs come into contact with these defilements, the sixth consciousness will rotate with these defilements and wisdom, and will continue to correspond to these worldly laws. This is called defilement wisdom correspondence. If a person's heart is constantly infected with these things, there will be more and more seeds of worldly dharma, and it will be extremely difficult to cultivate renunciation. Because we are exposed to these worldly laws every day, how can we stay away from them? We will only become more and more greedy for these realms, which will constitute a great obstacle to our learning of Buddhism. If the environment around us is like this, we can’t even think about seeing or hearing, which will cause great interference to our practice and study.
How to avoid the harm caused to us by polluting the environment? First of all, you must have a certain degree of self-control, as the ancients said: "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil, and do no evil." For lay people, there must be some control over these recreational tools and entertainment venues. A certain ability of self-discipline. Otherwise, if you study Buddhism and practice for an hour or half an hour a day, or come to the temple to study with others every week, and stay in that kind of environment, how can you improve your practice? Practice cannot stop or be discontinued. Once you stop, it will be difficult to continue. For monks and nuns, the impact of this aspect will be relatively small, because they live in a temple and the environment is relatively clean. However, you must pay special attention when using mobile phones and the Internet, maintain mindfulness and clear understanding, do what you should do, and do not get involved in complicated matters. The state of dyeing.
Furthermore, for monks and nuns, they should not go out all the time, especially not alone, and should not stay out at night, because these are great obstacles to cultivating the Tao.
Good man, although you are willing to stay away from this evil knowledge, you should not have any disgust or harmful intentions towards it. You should keep your mind in this way. ” (Volume 4)
We must think carefully about the above-mentioned evil environment, evil friends, and evil dharma in the world, and then make a decision based on the six senses and six senses. We should not create the ten evil karma, but should do the ten good karma. We should stay away from all kinds of evils in the world, especially evil friends. We should always be close to all kinds of good friends, good friends, and Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Why? People cannot live in isolation. They always need to be in the company of others and be in contact with others. So the people you come in contact with are very important. There is experience that shows that how you are depends on how the people around you are. ——The people around you are good people, so you are probably a good person. If the people around you are not good, then you are probably not good either. As the saying goes, "Those who speak the same voice respond to the same spirit."
As the "Satipa??hāna Sutra" says: "If a person is close to bad deeds, he is a bad person, so he should stay away from evil and do not do bad deeds. There are many people who are close to you, and they are close to each other. Because you are close, you behave with them, which may be good or bad. All people who seek good should approach good people. If they do, they can gain happiness. Good deeds are not the cause of suffering. Approaching good things increases merits, while approaching evils increases suffering. This is a brief description of merits and evils. If you are always close to good people, you will get a good name. If you are close to bad people, you will be looked down upon. Always be friendly to good people and stay away from bad friends. By being close to good people, you can give up all bad karma. ” (Volume 61)
2. Knowing and following teachers will lead to victory, and getting close to good friends and knowledge
In ancient times, there was an allusion of “Meng Meng’s mother moved three times”. Mencius’ mother wanted to To raise her son, Mencius' mother moved three times because of the appearance of evil friends in the surrounding environment. In order to avoid the influence of evil friends, Mencius' mother moved three times in search of a good environment, hoping to be close to good friends and good friends of Confucius. The same is true for the mother. In order to enable the young Confucius to become a talented person, she overcame great difficulties and took Confucius from her hometown Zouyi to Qufu, the capital of the state of Lu, to find the best teacher for him to achieve success. We all need to seek Masters, and when we study Buddhism, we should get closer to good teachers. As to what are the benefits of getting close to good teachers, and what are the disadvantages of not getting close to good teachers, we need to do more observation and thinking, and make a decision in our hearts - to learn Buddhism, we must get close to them. , Relying on good teachers is a very important issue. In the Avatamsaka Sutra, Manjushri Bodhisattva told Shancai Boy: "Good man, if you want to achieve all wisdom, you should decide to seek true and good teachers. ” (Volume 62)
A good teacher in Buddhism is, in today’s more popular terms, a “master”. We can have a good teacher to guide us on the path of practice. It is very important to help inspire our inner wisdom, compassion, and desire for good things, and guide us from ordinary people to the Buddha's land. As the "Miaofa Lotus Sutra" says: "If a good man or a good woman cultivates good roots, Gain good knowledge from generation to generation. His good teacher can perform Buddhist deeds, teach and benefit people, and lead them to Anuttara-samyaksambodhi. ...You should know that good teachers are the great cause and condition, the so-called transformation and guidance, so that they can see the Buddha and develop the mind of Anuttarasamyaksambodhi. "(Volume 7) "Maha Prajnaparamita Sutra" says: "You should stay away from evil teachers, and you should get close to and make offerings to good teachers. What kind of good teacher is this? Being able to say that emptiness has no form, no creation, no birth, no destruction, and all kinds of wisdom, so that people can feel happy and confident, is a good teacher. "(Volume 27)
Because the road to becoming a Buddha is very unfamiliar to ordinary Buddhists. It is an unexperienced mental journey. Where does it start and where does it end? No matter what happens in the process, we must have a guide to guide us. A good teacher can guide us to have enough confidence to move forward so that we will not get lost. Otherwise, it is very important to walk alone, even if you have something in your hand. Just looking at a map does not guarantee that you will not get lost, nor does it guarantee that you will always have the confidence to continue walking. If you are someone who has experience in spiritual practice, then if you see him and follow the practice, you will easily develop confidence and you will not get lost. Therefore, the map can only tell us the general outline, but some very specific issues cannot be clearly seen on the map. Since they are not marked on the map, we need experienced people to guide us.
The inner understanding must be confirmed by good teachers, and the doubts in the heart must also be solved by asking good teachers for help.
We might as well take a look at Gude’s friendship with good teachers. Master Xuanzang, who is known as "a famous king bows his head, a noble couple rubs his shoulders, and the winds of eternity are just one person". In his early years, he got close to many good friends, listened to and practiced Buddhism. When he encountered doubts that could not be solved, he vowed to travel west to India. , visit the teacher to seek Dharma. There is the following record in "The Biography of Master Tripitaka of Da Ci'en Temple": "(Master Xuanzang) had left home and lived with his brother. At that time, Master Jing in the temple was teaching the Nirvana Sutra. He held the scroll and meditated on it, so he forgot to sleep and eat. He also studied Master Yan I love taking pictures of Mahayana treatises more than dramas. I will finish them as soon as I hear them. After reading them again, I will not be able to find anything left. They are asked to sit down and repeat the poems. I have prepared the master's beautiful questions and started to speak from now on. At the age of thirteen... he entered Hanchuan via Ziwu Valley, where he met Master Kong and Master Jing, both of whom were great masters of the Taoist temple. They met each other in joy and sorrow, and stayed there for more than a month to learn from them.
Still moving forward to Chengdu, with all the virtues gathered, a large-scale Dharma banquet was built, so he listened to Ji, Siam Shelun, Pitan and Zhen Dharma Master Jiayan, cherished every inch of Yin, worked hard without slacking off, and studied it in two or three years. Various tribes...went to Zhaozhou to learn Shi Lun from Master Ye Shen, and then went to Zhi Dajue Temple in Chang'an to learn Ju She Lun from Master Yue. The year cannot come out. As for the hook that is deep and far-reaching, the opening is slightly open, and the one who is not able to reach it, and who alone understands the secrets, it is definitely not the same meaning. The Master of Sanxue was a Dharma Master who went to Beijing and returned to China. His teachings inspired China and his reputation spread overseas. His companions followed him like a cloud. Although he included a comprehensive collection of scriptures, he only taught Mahayana theory. When he arrived in Chang'an, he inquired about it again, but all his profound knowledge was gone. I don’t see it. Since then, the apprentice has changed his mind and is famous all over the capital. The master has visited all the teachers and prepared meals for him. I vowed to travel to the West to ask questions, and to obtain seventeen earthly theories to clear up the doubts, which are now called Yogi's earthly theories." (Volume 1)
