Biography

On January 3, 1911 (the third year of Xuantong in the Qing Dynasty), Yang Dezhi was born into a blacksmith family in Sanwangchong, Nanyangqiao, Liling County, Hunan Province (now part of Zhuzhou). He learned blacksmithing from his father when he was young, and later worked as a worker in the Anyuan Coal Mine in Pingxiang, Jiangxi. In 1928 (the seventeenth year of the Republic of China), Yang Dezhi joined the 7th Division of the Workers' and Peasants' Revolutionary Army formed by the armed forces of the Southern Hunan Uprising, and went to Jinggangshan with the army. Joined the Communist Party of China in October of the same year.

Since 1930 (the 19th year of the Republic of China), Yang Dezhi served as the communications guard platoon leader, spy company commander, and artillery company commander of the 11th Division of the 4th Red Army, and participated in the battles of Wenjia City, Ji'an, and the Central Soviet Area Counter "encirclement and suppression" operations.

After 1932 (the 21st year of the Republic of China), Yang Dezhi served as the commander of the new 93rd Regiment of the 45th Division of the 15th Red Army, the commander of the 20th Regiment of the 7th Division of the 1st Red Army, and the 1st Regiment of the 1st Division. long. Yang Dezhi was ordered to lead the 1st Red Regiment to hold the position for three days and nights, repelling successive attacks by three divisions of the Kuomintang army. He was commended by the headquarters and awarded the third-class Red Star Medal.
