Take an example of how people living on the Loess Plateau creatively adapt to and utilize the natural conditions here.

The Loess Plateau is located in the inland area, in the transition zone from temperate monsoon climate to temperate continental climate, and the climate is relatively arid. The Loess Plateau suffers from severe water and soil erosion, and the land surface is riddled with ravines and fragments. People have come up with various ways to adapt to the environment, develop production, and arrange life.

(1) Living in large cave dwellings on loess cliffs. The forest coverage rate in the Loess Plateau is low, and there is a lack of wood for building houses. Local people take advantage of the upright nature of loess to build cave dwellings for living.

(2) Plant drought-tolerant crops

The traditional crop in the Loess Plateau is millet, and wheat can also be grown in some places. These crops consume less water and can adapt to the relatively arid environment of the Loess Plateau.

(3) Dig water cellars to store water

Dig water cellars in the family yard to store domestic water, and dig water cellars at the edge of the field to store water for irrigation of farmland.

(4) Build terraces, dig fish scale pits to preserve water and soil, and build retaining dams to contain sand.
