With two-factor authentication enabled, only you can access your account on trusted devices or web pages. When logging in to a new device for the first time, you need to provide two kinds of information: your password and the six-digit verification code automatically displayed on the device you trust or sent to your phone number. After entering the verification code, you confirm that you trust this new device. For example, if you have an iPhone and want to log in to your account for the first time on a newly purchased Mac, you will be prompted to enter your password and the verification code will be automatically displayed on your iPhone.

Because you can no longer access your account by entering a password, two-factor authentication significantly enhances the security of Apple ID and all personal information stored through Apple.

After logging in, you will not be asked to enter the verification code again on this device unless you completely log out of the login account, erase the device data or need to change the password for security reasons. When you log on to the Web, you can choose to trust your browser, so you won't be asked to enter the verification code the next time you log on from this computer.

Trusted device

Trusted devices are devices that log in using two-factor authentication. It can be iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with iOS 9 and above, or Mac with OS X El Capitan and above. We know that this is your device. When you log in to other devices or browsers, this trusted device will display the verification code provided by Apple to verify your identity. Apple Watch using watchOS 6 or later can receive the verification code when logging in with Apple ID, but it cannot be used as a trusted device to reset the password.

Trusted telephone number

Trusted phone number refers to the number that can receive verification code through SMS or automatic voice phone. You must verify at least one trusted phone number to register for two-factor authentication.

You should also consider verifying another phone number that you can use, such as a home phone number or a number used by relatives and friends. If you are temporarily unable to use your primary number or your own equipment, you can use this alternate number.

Verification Code

A verification code is a temporary code sent to a trusted device or phone number when you log in to a new device or browser with an Apple ID. You can also get the verification code from the settings of the trusted device.

The verification code is different from the device password you use to unlock the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
