Mola is called ocean mola in Britain and America, moon fish in Spain, swimming head fish in Germany and mambo fish in Japan. Mola mola's Latin name means millstone. Mola may be related to its habit of floating sideways and sunbathing at sea, so some people call it "Mola". Molas are also called head fish, because they seem to have only a head but no body, which is the general name of three marine fishes of Molas family. The shape is special and the body is short, and the rear part completely stops behind the high triangular dorsal fin and gluteal fin. The sides of the body are flat, the skin is firm, the mouth is small, and the teeth heal in a beak shape. Molas are large, gray or light brown, with a maximum length of 3.3 meters (1 1 ft) and a weight of 1.900 kg (4,000 lbs). It is oval or round, and Linnaeus compares it to a millstone, hence its English common name. Temperate and tropical waters all over the world, common in offshore surface.

The other two bodies are longer, but the back of dorsal fin and anal fin are also shorter. Molalanceolata or Masturuslanceolatus is also very big, while Ranzanialaevis is very small and slender, about 70 cm (30 inches) long.

Mola is one of the largest and strangest fish in the world. Their bodies are round and flat, like a big plate. Fish have a long, sharp fin on their bodies and stomachs, but the caudal fin is almost nonexistent, which makes them look like they have cut a piece from the back. Molas mainly feed on jellyfish and scoop food with their small mouths. They often bask in the sun on the water. Although clumsy in appearance, it sometimes jumps.
