In another world where Japan was divided and ruled after the war, in the summer of 1996, under the rule of the Federal State The mysterious giant tower project in Hokkaido has quietly begun. In the U.S.-occupied Honshu, no one knows the true purpose of this tower.

The tower is a huge structure that can be clearly seen across the Karutsu Strait. Two 15-year-old boys: Hiroshi Fujisawa and Takuya Shirakawa, have strange feelings about it, whether they are in awe or admiration. They used military scraps to assemble a small aircraft named Ryusara at an abandoned station on the mountain. Both boys like Sayuri Sawatari in their class at the same time. Whether it is Sayuri or the "Tower", it is a symbol for them, something that is out of reach now but will definitely be close in the future.

However, when Sayuri was in the third grade of junior high school, she suddenly suffered from an unexplained memory disorder and transferred to Tokyo. In an indescribable sense of exhaustion, the two teenagers gradually stopped making airplanes and embarked on different paths.

In Tokyo in 2001, Hiroshi and Takuya, already college students, met again. It was learned that Sayuri was still ill and had been sleeping all year round. The two wanted to rescue her. In the process, they unknowingly approached the "Tower" and the nature of the world, as well as Sayuri's hidden secrets.

The first episode "Sakura Copy" talks about two people expressing their feelings to each other and their confusion about the future.

The second episode "Astronaut" is about the quiet and lonely life of the male protagonist Guishu when there is no Akari. At the same time, through the description of another girl, we can also see how much Guishu misses Akari.

The third painting "Five Centimeters per Second" is about the adult male and female protagonists living basically unrelated lives. From the intertwined dialogues between the male and female protagonists, it tells us about the vagaries of life and the insignificance of our power.

"5 Centimeters per Second", which consists of three stories, abandons suspense and returns to life. It uses a large number of realistic scenes and uses close-to-realistic animation to tell people about Takaki Tono and Shino who parted because of their graduation from elementary school. The two of them, Hara Akari, have a good impression of each other and always keep them in mind. But because of the separation, we can only place this special feeling elsewhere. As time went by, one day Guishu finally decided to go to Akari on a snowy day and confess his feelings...
