In the field exploration activities, we often encounter obstacles that are difficult to cross, such as steep snow slopes, swift rivers, rock walls and rock cracks. In order to ensure safe passage, we need to master the techniques and methods of self-protection and mutual protection.

In field exploration, there are two main protection methods: upper protection and lower protection. Upper protection means that the protective rope passes through a fixed object or fixed point above the protected person, and the protector protects it below, or the protector directly protects it above the protected person; Lower protection means that the protective rope is protected by a fixed object or a fixed point below the protected person.

In addition, group protection is often used in outdoor mountaineering and adventure activities. Usually a group of 3 ~ 4 people. Connected by a protective rope 40 to 50 meters long, they protect each other when passing through difficult and dangerous areas. A group must have more than two people with climbing and protection experience. If they are inexperienced novices, sometimes group defense can't play a protective role, but it will cause greater accidents and losses.

When climbing the rock wall, experienced climbers can adopt the way of protecting from below, that is, the climber ties the protective rope around his waist, and hangs it on the protective fulcrum in the process of climbing upwards, and the protector protects from below. For inexperienced climbers, try to use the upper protection method. At the same time, we should pay attention to the following:
