Arbor Day

"Arbor Day" is a festival stipulated by law in some countries to promote the benefits of forests and mobilize the masses to participate in voluntary afforestation. According to the length of time, it can be divided into tree planting day, tree planting week or tree planting month, collectively called Arbor Day. Through this kind of activity, we can stimulate people's love for forests and afforestation, improve people's understanding of the functions of forests, promote land greening, and achieve the goals of loving and protecting forests, expanding forest resources, and improving the ecological environment.

The origin of Arbor Day

Arbor Day was initiated by the state of Nebraska in the United States. On April 10, 1872, Morton proposed the establishment of Arbor Day at a meeting held by the Nebraska Gardening Association. The state adopted Morton's suggestion and designated April 22 each year as the state's Arbor Day. In 1932, the state issued the world's first Arbor Day stamp, which showed two children planting trees. Later, every state in the United States and even Countries around the world responded.

Arbor Day in China

Although there was a saying in ancient China that people were encouraged to plant trees, it is a modern thing for the state to explicitly stipulate tree planting festivals in the form of law. On July 31, 1915, the Chinese government designated the Qingming Festival of the lunar calendar as Arbor Day. At that time, tree planting ceremonies were held across the country and afforestation activities were organized. In April 1928, the Kuomintang government changed the original Arbor Day to March 12 every year in order to commemorate the death anniversary of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Sixth Session of the Fifth Standing Committee of the National People's Congress decided in February 1979 that March 12 should be Arbor Day. The general provisions of the revised "Forest Law of the People's Republic of China" passed at the meeting stipulated: "Afforestation and forest protection are the obligations of citizens", thus bringing afforestation into the scope of law.

China’s Arbor Day is scheduled for March 12. In February 1979, the sixth meeting of the Standing Committee of the Fifth National People's Congress of China decided to designate March 12 every year as China's Arbor Day. In December 1981, the Fourth Session of the Fifth National People's Congress passed the "Resolution on Carrying out the National Voluntary Tree Planting Movement". The State Council promulgated the specific implementation measures for the national voluntary tree planting movement the following year. Before and after Arbor Day, afforestation activities are carried out intensively across the country.

Other countries

According to United Nations statistics, more than 50 countries in the world have established Arbor Day. Due to the different national conditions and geographical locations of various countries, the names and times of Arbor Day in various countries are also different. For example, Japan calls it "Tree Festival" and "Greening Week"; Israel calls it "New Year's Day of Trees"; Myanmar calls it "Arbor Day". ; Yugoslavia calls it "Tree Planting Week"; Iceland calls it "Student Tree Planting Day"; India calls it "National Arbor Day"; France calls it "National Tree Day"; Canada calls it "Forest Week".

Arbor Day in Jordan is January 15th;

Arbor Day in Spain It is February 1st;

Arbor Day in Iraq is March 6th;

France stipulated March as the legal "Tree Planting Month" in 1977, and the day at the end of the month is " "Tree Planting Day", the national greening day has reached its climax;

Japan in 1922 designated April 1st to 7th as Greening Week each year, and April 3rd (the anniversary of Emperor Jimmu) as Arbor Day;

North Korea’s Arbor Day is April 6; April and October are “Tree Planting Months”;

Australia’s Arbor Day is the first Friday in May;
