Four Taboos for Visiting Temples

One is to avoid misnaming.

monks in temples should be addressed as "masters" and "wizards", Taoist priests as "Taoist priests" and abbots as "elders", "abbots" and "Zen masters". The monks in the Lama Temple should be addressed as "Lama", which means "guru".

second, avoid improper manners.

The way to greet a monk is to put your hands together and bow your head slightly, or to put one hand on your chest with your head slightly lowered. Don't use improper manners such as shaking hands, hugging and touching the monk's head.

three taboos are improper speech. When talking with monks and Taoist priests, you should not mention the words of killing, marriage, and eating fishy meat, so as not to cause resentment among monks.

four taboos are improper behavior.

When visiting a temple, don't talk loudly, give directions, ridicule or walk around casually, and don't tamper with the things in the temple, especially avoid touching and carving statues and taking photos at will. In case of Buddhist activities, you should stand silently or leave quietly. At the same time, we should take good care of our children so as not to make rude things because of their ignorance. In short, it is enough to be respectful, clean and kind-hearted, which is fundamental. I won't go into details.

The proper etiquette for entering the main hall:

1. Enter from the left and right sides, and don't walk in the center to show respect. If you walk on the left side of the door, enter with your left foot first, and enter with your right foot first on the right side.

2. Except Buddhist scriptures, Buddha statues and offerings, others are not allowed to be brought in.

3. You can only enter when chanting, worshipping Buddha, cleaning and perfuming oil. You can't: take the Buddhist temple as a passage and wander around at will.

4. Before entering the temple, you should clean your body and mind and wash your hands. When entering, you should not look around and look around. After worshipping, you can look at the sacred face and say to yourself, "If you can see the Buddha, you should wish all beings to see all the Buddhas without being an eyesore.

5. In the Buddhist temple, you can only turn right, not left, to show the right path. When people * * * repair the Buddha, they should pay attention to the corner, so they don't have to stop and ask questions, just go up to Qi Mei.

6. Don't talk about secular language in the temple, and don't talk loudly. Don't sit in the temple except listening to the scriptures and listening to the Dharma. Even if you discuss Buddhism, don't laugh loudly.

7. In the Buddhist temple, you are not allowed to stand with your feet leaning against the wall, leaning against the table, resting your chin on your hips, standing with a stick leaning against the wall or spitting, or sitting with a dustpan. When standing, you should put your palms together or stand up straight to show respect.

8. Don't yawn, spit, fart, etc. in the main hall. If you have to, you should leave the hall. When yawning, cover your mouth with sleeves, and when spitting, wrap it with toilet paper and put it in your pocket. Don't go in and out to influence the public.

(2) How to respect the Buddha statue:

1. Don't criticize the solemnity of the Buddha statue, and no Buddha statue can be placed in the bedroom.

2. Anyone who passes by a place where there is a Buddha statue should dress up for worship or cross their hands to ask questions: if they are in the Confucian Classrooms and Buddhist temples, they should worship. If time and space are inconvenient, they can cross their hands or ask questions.

3. If the Buddha statue is damaged, it should be properly handled, and it must not be piled up at will:

(1) If the Buddha statue is damaged or unclean, it should be repaired as much as possible, such as re-mounting and making it clean.

(2) If it can't be repaired, the paper maker should cremate it respectfully and bury the remaining ashes in a clean place. After being cremated or decomposed with respect, the stone carvers will scatter them in rivers and seas so as not to be trampled on.

4. Method of incense: When incense is applied, hold the incense with your thumb and forefinger, close the other three fingers, and raise the incense to your eyebrows with both hands, and watch the Buddha and Bodhisattva appear in front of us and accept the incense. If there are many people, put the incense vertically so as not to burn others, and then walk three steps away from the Buddha statue, hold the incense and admire the Buddha.

it is advisable to put one incense stick. If you want to put three incense sticks, put the first incense stick in the middle (to support the Buddha), the second incense stick in the right (to support the monk) and the third incense stick in the left (to support all sentient beings, may this incense spread all over the ten realms, support all buddhas and respect all the sages).

5. don't blow out the fire with your mouth when lighting incense. After inserting the incense, just step back and ask questions, without nodding all the time.

6. If you see a Buddha statue or a scripture placed in an unclean place, you should hold it and move it to a clean place. If you see someone who is disrespectful to the Buddha statue, you should speak kindly in private.

Worship Buddha should follow the Buddhist system, which is different from the customary system. The worship method is detailed as follows:

(1) Stand in front of the futon with your hands (fingers together) and palms (obliquely upward) on your chest, with your feet in a figure of eight, with the distance between the left and right heels about two inches and the distance between the toes about eight inches;

(2) Place your right palm down and press it in the center of the futon, with your left palm still and your knees astride, and kneel on the futon

(3) Place your left palm on the front and left side of the futon;

(4) move the right palm from the center to the right in front of the futon, and the two palms are separated by six inches;

(5) press your head on the futon between your palms;

(6) Turn outward with two palms (palms up, meaning to hold the Buddha's feet with two hands, and the head meets the foot);

(7) Turn the finger with both hands and press it in the original place of the futon;

(8) The head leaves the futon from the crouch;

(9) move the right palm to the center of the futon;

(1) Leave the futon with your left palm and put it on your chest like crossing your hands;

(11) Hold up forcefully with the right palm (both knees leave the futon at the same time), and close the left palm as the chest. This is a worship, at least three, and most of them are stacked in three numbers, such as six, nine and twelve.

There is still a ceremony after the worship, such as a secular bow, which is called inquiry. Just after the worship, when the hands are folded together as the chest, the folded palms are placed slightly downward (when bowing) and close to the abdomen. After that, place the right palm in the left palm, fold it into a fist, and slowly lift it from the bottom up to the eyebrow level (when it is straight), then slowly put down your palms together as your chest, palm up, right hand folded to the left hand first, and the two thumbs are connected, which is the Great Samadhi Seal (Mituo Seal means that the left hand is folded to the right, which is the same as Samadhi Seal). This is to worship Buddha, and then your head is slightly lower, and your hands will spread out.

When you enter a temple, you must know that

Buddhist groups are the most disciplined. Those who have received the precepts have learned dignity, and they naturally move and salute. How can ordinary scholars understand

? Can't help but provoke ridicule. In order to write a few common rules for reference:

1. Entering the temple: After entering the temple gate, it is not appropriate to go straight in the center, and you should walk along the left arm of the individual when advancing and retreating.

when entering the temple door, it is better to carry the hat and walking stick by yourself or leave it in his room. Never put it on the Buddha case or the Buddha table.

2. The mat in the center of the main hall is used by the temple owner. You should not worship on the mats on both sides last week.

No one should walk in front of him when praying.

3. Reading classics: If there are classics read separately in the temple, it is advisable to read them sitting up. You must clean your hands first, put it on the table and look flat. You should not

hold a roll or put it on your lap. Clothes, hats, etc., especially not on the scriptures.

4. Meet a monk: when you meet a monk, you are called a mage or a big monk. When bowing to him, if he says a bow, there is no need to continue to

strongly bow. Mortals are not allowed to worship Buddha, meditate, recite scriptures, eat, sleep, go through menstruation or go to the toilet.

5. Instruments: bells and drums in the temple should not be knocked at, and things such as cassock and sea blue should not be tampered with.

6. Listening to Scripture: Sit down with the worshippers. If you arrive later, the master has already ascended to the throne. You must bow to the Buddha, take a

step backward, and then bow to the master. After seated, don't greet acquaintances, don't sit up and down, cough and talk. If you can't

finish listening, but make a gesture to the mage, quit quietly, and don't wave others to make you quit.

Rule 1: One needle and one thread in the temple are not allowed to be used.

If you receive a gift from Master, you have to donate to the merit box. Before I became a monk, I often stayed in the < P > Temple for a few days because of my poor health. I found that many believers casually took food from the kitchen in the Buddhist temple, or picked fruit from trees in the temple, or took food for the fruit on the table, or when the temple held a ceremony or celebrated the birthday of the Buddha and Bodhisattva, Tan Yue (donor) < P > supported a large number of items for fasting, but when the ceremony was completed,

all kinds of actions like this have seriously violated the precepts of stealing and embezzling ten permanent residences (that is, things donated by all beings everywhere,

money is called permanent possessions), and 1% of them will definitely suffer in hell. The things in the temple are of no value, so subtle that you can make a phone call in the temple without investing a dollar, which is enough to go to hell and suffer. This is called

regret it later!

because a small fruit is big, it can rise to heaven and suffer in hell.

Some people can't help asking, is it true that you will go to hell just because you are greedy for a dollar in a temple? I don't believe

a little. Here, I would like to tell a story about the Buddha's conversion to Buddhism from a foreign brahmin, so I can understand its seriousness:

One day, the Buddha led his disciples to a village to preach Buddhism, and was known by a foreign brahmin, that is, he first spread

evil words to the villagers, saying: This Prince Siddhartha (Buddha's common name) is coming to incite everyone's descendants to become monks, and everyone will have no future.

The Buddha led his disciples into the village and went to every household in the village to beg for food, but he was unwilling to give food to the Buddha. When the Buddha

walked into the alley, he saw an old woman coming out from the back door to pour out the rice washing water, and the Buddha said to her

that as long as she sincerely poured the rice washing water into the bowl, she would be blessed by the gods, and the woman sincerely offered it to the Buddha

.

The Buddha immediately revealed it, and put out his tongue to cover his whole face. At this time, the layman realized that the Buddha was an overhaul who never spoke nonsense

, because practitioners at that time, no matter Xiandao or layman, knew that a practitioner who never spoke nonsense

could stick out his tongue to cover his whole face.

In addition, I sincerely asked the Buddha why the merit of a bowl of rice washing water can be promoted to a deity: The Buddha

has boundless enlightenment, and immediately pointed to a big tree in front of her, saying: This big tree was originally buried in the

soil by a tiny seed (the seed is small but the tree is big). This woman can get infinite blessings because of her sincere dedication to the Buddha, but she can ascend to heaven < After being enlightened by the Buddha, this heretic immediately converted to the Buddha as a Buddhist disciple < P >.

From this allusion, it can be seen that taking a dollar from the temple is not to be careless, and it is to sow the consequences of hell! In the past, when I was in

high school, I believed in Christianity, studied the Bible, and had similar allusions, which were suggested in my book

"Causal Treatment to Change My Life", so I won't repeat them here.

If you can understand the principle that a small fruit makes a big difference, then you must keep in mind every precept I list at the end of this article, strictly

observe it, never make a mistake, avoid the consequences, and regret it, or blame Master for not revealing it, or think the precepts are too strict or

bound.

Article 2: Don't pick the fruit from the temple hill

Many believers go to the temple to worship Buddha every week, which is very pious. However, some people, who don't know the rules, can't help but pick the fruit from the back of the temple hill and eat it. However,

they have committed the crime of stealing temple things, which is enough to go to hell. I used to go to the Daxian Temple in Chiayi for rest. The back hill of the temple is very large, and many fruit trees are planted. Every holiday, tourists rest in the shade of the back hill, and the cool breeze brings them quite pleasant.

I often see many people picking fruits and eating. Because I am a pilgrim, it is inconvenient to interfere, but I only sigh that all beings are greedy for food, which is also

the motivation to write this article.

At present, there is no mountain in this Buddhist temple to build a practice Dojo, otherwise, a slogan will have to be set up: "Please don't pick the fruits of this mountain

, and spray pesticides". Presumably, no one dares to pick them. Although there is no mountain for people to pick fruits in this Buddhist temple, some people have

picked fruits to eat: because there are often good faith and reverence to prepare fruits to the Buddhist temple, they don't say anything, so they put the fruits on the Buddhist table and don't take them back. After a few days, some of the water is definitely rotten, and some of them are still perfect. If the converted brother

in the church doesn't know the rules, he will automatically eat them, but if he breaks the rules, he should be punished.
