1983 In 2016, the International Consumers Union determined March 15th as "International Consumer Rights Day" every year. This is based on the "Special Presidential Message on the Protection of Consumer Interests" delivered by former U.S. President John F. Kennedy to the U.S. Congress on March 15, 1962, which first proposed the famous "four rights" of consumers, namely: the right to Receive safety guarantees; have the right to obtain correct information; have the right to make free decisions; and have the right to put forward consumer opinions. These four rights proposed by Kennedy have since been gradually recognized by consumer organizations around the world and become the most basic work goals.

Choosing this day as "International Consumer Rights Day" is also to expand publicity and promote activities to protect consumers on an international scale.

The consumer rights protection movement originated in Europe and emerged in developed capitalist countries after World War II. It has a history of more than 100 years. After World War II, various consumer organizations came into being and rapidly expanded to developing countries. In 1960, Consumers Union International (CI) was established.

Now, more than 300 consumer organizations in more than 90 countries around the world have joined CI.

At the same time, worldwide consumer protection activities have also received attention from the United Nations. Representatives of Consumers International have become consultants and liaisons in the United Nations Economic and Social Council, Industrial Development Organization, Food Organization, UNCTAD and other institutions, representing the interests of consumers and participating in relevant meetings and policy formulation work. On April 9, 1985, the 39th United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted the Guidelines for Consumer Protection. It has greatly promoted the formulation and implementation of "Consumer Rights Protection Laws" in various countries around the world, bringing the global consumer protection movement into a more vigorous stage of development.
