The word "erudite and diligent" originated from the original motto of Guangzhou University before the merger, which was inherited from the motto of private Guangzhou University founded in the Republic of China. The motto of private Guangzhou University evolved from the motto of the former National Guangdong University (later renamed Sun Yat-sen University).

The original text of "erudition and perseverance" comes from the Confucian classic "The Doctrine of the Mean", which means that people should turn themselves into gentlemen and do things fairly and appropriately according to the nature of "sincerity" through the cultivation process of erudition, interrogation, deliberation, discernment and perseverance.
