The Earth Day event originated in the United States. In 1969, Democratic U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed holding lectures on environmental issues on college campuses across the country. Dennis Hayes, a 25-year-old Harvard Law School student at the time, quickly turned Nelson's proposal into a concrete idea for large-scale community activities across the United States, and received widespread support from many young students.

On April 22, 1970, the United States held its first massive "Earth Day" event. This is the first large-scale mass environmental protection movement in human history. As the beginning of mankind's modern environmental movement, the "Earth Day" event promoted the establishment of environmental regulations in many countries. On April 22, 1990, more than 200 million people in more than 140 countries around the world held various environmental protection publicity activities at the same time.
