The offside rule was formally stipulated in the 1874 Football Rules. However, the offside rules at that time were very different from the offside rules now. At that time, it was stipulated that when an offensive player reaches the frontcourt and there are only two defensive players in front (including the goalkeeper), then the offensive player is considered offside. In the early 1870s, football began to become popular in Western countries. At that time, offense was generally emphasized and little attention was paid to defense. This can be clearly seen from the game formations (1217, 1226) commonly used by some countries at that time. There were as many as six or seven strikers in front.
