Development of Cement Road in China

In the late 1920s, China began to lay concrete pavements on roads and airport runways in some big cities. From 1932 to 1933, a 500-meter-long and 5.5-meter-wide concrete pavement test section was paved on the national highway from Nanjing to Hangzhou. 1940, a concrete pavement with a length of120km and a width of 3m was paved on the expressway from Beijing to Tianjin.

1948, a reinforced concrete pavement with a length of 2200m, a width of 45m and a thickness of 30cm was laid on the runway of Nanjing Airport. In 1950s, with the development of cement industry, large-scale concrete pavements were laid on the main roads and airport runways in some large and medium-sized cities in China. Since the early 1970s, some provinces have begun to lay concrete pavements on highway trunk lines.

Almost all airport runways in China use concrete pavement. Most concrete pavements in China use single-layer cast-in-place plain concrete, but a few of them use precast slabs, or make them into double layers, or are equipped with steel bars.
