Is Syria still at war?

The war in Syria continues, but there is no large-scale military action.

The Syrian people are still facing the impact of humanitarian crisis, economic difficulties and earthquake disasters. UN Secretary-General Guterres has called for injecting new energy into the peace process, ending arbitrary detention and disappearance, and ensuring a nationwide ceasefire and political solution in Syria. The Syrian war has lasted for 12 years, resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths and millions of people being displaced.

On March 5, 2023, the Syrian civil war officially entered 13. This protracted conflict has brought endless suffering and pain to the Syrian people, and also brought profound turmoil and influence to the whole Middle East. Although the Syrian government forces have gained some strategic advantages in recent years, the conflict continues.

The causes of the Syrian war:

2011March 15, as part of the Arab spring movement, a large-scale mass protest called for democratic reform of the government broke out in Damascus, the Syrian capital. In mid-March of that year, five young students in the southern city of Dera/Kloc-0 were arrested for scribbling anti-government slogans in public places, which triggered anti-government protests and gradually spread throughout the country, leading to a protracted Syrian civil war.

With the escalation of protests, opposition forces began to exchange fire with government forces, forming a complex situation in which many forces participated. The most important opposition forces include the Syrian Democratic Force (SDF) led by Kurds, the Free Syrian Army (FSA) supported by Turkey, and the extremist organization Islamic State (IS). These armed forces control different degrees of territory in different regions and confront government forces for a long time.
