Traditionally, the horizontal criticism of couplets is from right to left.

In the traditional sense, couplets are posted from right to up, so horizontal comments are also written from right to left, including some traditional plaques and signboards on the street that are not painted, and they are also read from right to left. However, people's writing and reading habits in modern society have changed from left to right, including the horizontal batch of couplets sold by vendors in the market, mostly from left to right.

Where is the first word that has gradually developed into a horizontal batch, then paste the first half. That is, the horizontal batch reads from right to left, the upper part is attached to the right side, and the lower part is attached to the left side; If the horizontal batch is read from left to right, the upper part is posted on the left and the lower part is posted on the right. But if it is a self-written couplet, it is more appropriate to write it from right to left.

Development of couplets

Spring Festival couplets originated in Fu Tao. This form of peach symbol was formed in the Zhou Dynasty. In the Zhou Dynasty, on New Year's Eve, people called rectangular mahogany boards hanging on both sides of the gate a symbol of peach blossom. According to the Book of Rites of the Later Han Dynasty, Fu Tao was six inches long and three inches wide, and the words "Shen Tu", "Lei Yu" and "Ershen" were written on the mahogany board. "On the first day of the first month, every household in Fu Tao made it, which is famous for its immortal wood, and ghosts and gods are afraid." That is, stick a peach symbol on the door and dare not enter the house.

Therefore, "Yanjing Years" in the Qing Dynasty said: "Spring Festival couplets, that is, Fu Tao." That is to say, Spring Festival couplets, like peach characters, are simplified.
