After forty, he traveled five times and traveled half of China. These famous mountains and rivers of the motherland have broadened his mind. At the same time, he raised insects and fish at home, planted flowers and trees, and made an in-depth observation on the appearance and expression of flowers, birds and insects.

The in-depth observation of objective reality is the realistic basis of his bold processing and creation, so when he was forty to fifty years old, his work style changed greatly. At this time, the old man's works are close to maturity.

In the process of creation, the attitude of the old man Baishi is very serious, and each stroke has an objective basis, which is essentially different from simply playing with pen and ink. In his own biography, he once said:

Portraits of thousands of insects, vivid images of hundreds of birds. Only the dragon in the scale worm has never seen it, so we can't be bold.

This just shows that the old people learn painting from the observation of objective things, which lays the foundation for the true description in creation. This is one of the fundamental reasons for his outstanding artistic achievements.

The old man Baishi has a deep foundation in painting flowers, birds, insects and fish. Since he was a child, he likes to sketch mountain flowers, static grass, bugs and small fish. As a painter after the age of 20, painting scores and stickers can't meet the needs, so we must create sketches of flowers, birds, insects and fish. After "going out five times and returning five times", he planted dozens of pear trees, plum trees, loquat trees and peach trees to raise fish worms at home, and the yard was covered with wild flowers and weeds, which became the objects of his observation and sketching.

Sketching is closely related to creation. You can't create without sketching. The old man Baishi often emphasizes that sketching is the routine work of painters. Teacher Zou emphasized that sketching should not only be based on the experience of predecessors, but more importantly, it should be based on nature and life. The book Catalogue of Ancient Paintings of Sheikh in Southern Qi Dynasty puts forward: "There are six ways to paint, one is vivid, the other is vivid with a pen, the third is pictographic, the fourth is to color according to the class, the fifth is to operate by trade, and the sixth is to transfer." Among them, the three, four and five methods are particularly important for sketching, which basically summarizes the three important links of sketching in Chinese painting. At the same time, sketching is not a simple description of the superficial phenomenon of the object, but a painter's profound observation of the times, nationalities, society and nature. It is a kind of consciousness, a kind of spirit and feelings condensed in the painter's heart, which are expressed through pen and ink.
