What are the hazards of small load operation of diesel generator set?

Five Harms of Diesel Generator Set in Small Load Operation

Long-term low idle speed or no-load for more than 10 minutes will damage the engine. Because the temperature of the combustion chamber is too low, the fuel can't burn completely. This will lead to carbon deposition around the injector nozzle and piston ring, and lead to valve adhesion. If the engine coolant temperature is lower than 60°C, the unburned fuel will wash away the lubricating oil on the cylinder wall and dilute the lubricating oil in the crankcase. Diluting fuel will affect the quality of lubricating oil and shorten the life of engine. Try to shorten the idle time to prevent this from happening.

Five Harms of Diesel Generator Set in Small Load Operation

Five hazards of small load operation of diesel generator set;

When the diesel generator set operates under small load, with the extension of operation time, the following five dangers will appear:

1. The piston-cylinder liner seal is not good, the engine oil burns in the combustion chamber, and the exhaust gas emits blue smoke;

2. For supercharged diesel engines, the supercharged pressure is low due to low load and no load. It is easy to reduce the sealing effect of supercharger oil seal (non-contact), and the oil rushes into the booster chamber and enters the cylinder with the intake air;

3. Part of the engine oil escaping into the cylinder is involved in combustion, and part of it cannot be completely burned, forming carbon deposits at the valve, air inlet, piston crown, piston ring, etc., and part of it is discharged with the exhaust gas. In this way, the engine oil will gradually accumulate in the exhaust passage of the cylinder liner, and carbon deposition will also be formed;

4. When the engine oil in the booster chamber accumulates to a certain extent, it will leak from the joint surface of the booster; 5. Long-term low-load operation will lead to more serious wear of moving parts and deterioration of engine combustion environment, leading to early overhaul period.

Therefore, foreign diesel engine manufacturers emphasize reducing the low/no-load running time as much as possible, and the minimum load is not less than 25%-30% of the rated power of the unit.

Diesel generator running at full load for a long time can not only improve its own performance, find potential safety hazards, but also avoid major communication accidents.
