Through the Qinling Mountains Lei Shuyan

When I talk about the Qinling Mountains, I can’t help but think of those miserable and difficult poems about the Qinling Mountains.

At that time, starting from Chang'an, Li Bai took the west road, "There is a bird path in the west of Taibai, which can cross the top of Emei"; the poet lamented that the road to Shu was difficult, as difficult as climbing to the sky; but Han Yu took the The east road leads to Lantian and Shangluo. It is winter, and the snow is deep and the road is dangerous. "The snow covers the blue and the horse is blocked." These poems about hardship have become a portrayal of the hardships and dangers in the Qinling Mountains for thousands of years.

53 years ago, I followed in the footsteps of ancient poets, passing through Lantian, crossing Muhu Pass, entering Yukou, passing Heilongkou, and heading to Shangluo. At that time, I was only a fourth grade student. I still don’t know that there are so many poets who have lived and trekked in this land. My grandpa, mother and I traveled early and stayed overnight, experiencing the difficulty of these hundreds of miles of mountain road with both feet. At that time, although the highway had been built, there were no buses or cars passing through. The passers-by on the road are mostly mountain people wearing hemp shoes and leggings. They carry some mountain products on their backs or pull some wood on a frame truck to exchange for food and supplies outside the mountains. There are occasional trucks and horse-drawn carriages entering the mountain, but most of them are public transport vehicles and do not carry people. If you want to ask someone to give you a lift, you have to get up in the middle of the night and wait on the roadside. Often you wait for several hours and say many nice things, but you still can't find anyone willing to give you a lift.

When I entered the mountains for the first time, everything felt new. Looking at the distant mountains and nearby ridges, listening to the birds chirping in the springs; occasionally there is an ancient pine hanging upside down on the top of the cliff, but I still want to stop and look at it for a long time; looking at the red and blue pebbles at the bottom of the mountain stream, I also want to lean down and pick a few. My mother often dissuades me, saying that the road is long and I should walk well. There is a roadside shop in Xiangwan, and oil lamps are lit to invite customers to rest. My grandpa went to the store in front to check it out. I always felt that the store was not clean and I missed every store. Finally, I finally found a big carriage and horse shop to stay at. As soon as you enter the shop, there is a big Kang, which can accommodate more than ten people, regardless of gender. Grandpa, mother and I slept next to the wall. There is no canteen in the store. There is a big pot set up by the door. Guests can bring their own rice and noodles to cook their own meals. I think this kind of simplicity is probably a custom that has been practiced since the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

No words for a night. Due to jumping around the day before, my legs and feet were already in severe pain when I got off the ground in the morning. My mother rubbed it for me and found that my legs were swollen. Just like that, another day trip. People in my hometown call this kind of walking "drying". This is roughly equivalent to sailing.

That trip to the Qinling Mountains was my first memory of long journeys and mountains. So when I think about traveling to the Qinling Mountains, I have a painful intuition that first reminds me: it’s difficult.

In recent years, I have been to Shangluo, and the journey was naturally smooth. Regardless of whether I was in a car or not, I could go up the mountain as soon as I stepped on the accelerator. Although the journey up and down the mountain is still longer, it is much more convenient. The car has passed the Qinling Mountains.

However, this is only the east road. The middle road is from Xi'an to Zhashui, Zhen'an and Ankang. It was very difficult a few years ago. It takes two or three hours to cross the mountain. Once the mountain is blocked by heavy snow, many roads will be cut off and walking will still be inconvenient. I have always heard that a tunnel will be drilled through the Qinling Mountains. When I arrived in Xi'an a few years ago, the tunnel was completed. Cars can go through the Qinling Mountains and directly reach southern Shaanxi. This is exciting news. As soon as I arrived in Xi'an, I immediately asked a friend to drive south.

Nowadays, the roads in Xi'an are wide. As soon as you leave the city, within a few dozen minutes, the Qinling Mountains will change from purple to blue, approaching from a distance, with mountains, rocks, trees, cottages and people all in front of you.

It was winter, and the sparse vegetation on the mountaintops stood still in the cold wind; large stone cliffs revealed their old-fashioned faces from the lush summer vegetation, adding to the solemnity of the mountains. It's very foresty; after a winter without snow, the hillside looks dark, showing some signs of poverty.

Entering the mountain from Shibianyu, passing through several small tunnels, with Mount Wutai on your head; and further on, you will find the "Qinling Zhongnan Mountain Tunnel".

Friends introduced the grandeur of this tunnel along the way. This is a two-way, two-lane long cave with a total length of 18.2 kilometers. In terms of single-hole, two-way tunnels, it is second only to the 24.5-kilometer Lerdo Tunnel in Norway, ranking second in the world; but in terms of two-hole, two-way tunnels, it surpasses the two-hole, one-way, four-lane tunnel in Kantsu, Japan. Ranked first in the world.

Perhaps because it has just opened, there are not many cars on the road. As soon as you enter the bright and spacious tunnel, you feel like you have entered the mythical world under the sea. Two rows of overhead lights with a faint blue light lead your sight and imagination further into the distance. You can't see the entrance of the cave in front, it's just straight and long.

After driving for 5 kilometers, the cave suddenly became wider. There are tall bamboo trees on both sides, and underneath there is a green grass pavement. The lights suddenly turned on, as if you were in a leisure park on the ground, refreshing your tired body and mind. Upon closer inspection, they are all man-made landscapes. Probably just to reduce the driver's visual fatigue, they appear alternately every 5 kilometers, dividing the long tunnel into pieces of scenery.

There is a unique cave. At that moment, I was imagining the rocks, ancient cypresses, and pines towering above my head; imagining the wild sheep, apes, and various rare birds that were active among the green bamboos and green grass; that they could be safe and sound and still live their thousand years. A hundred years of untroubled life.

Of course, I can’t help but be infected by the great creation of man’s ingenuity. With their hard work and hard work, those close workers in the Qinling Mountains who have been digging rocks and drilling holes year after year have made huge contributions to the national economy and people's livelihood.

Thinking like this, for about 20 minutes, I saw the entrance of the cave, reached southern Shaanxi, reached the boundary of Zhashui, and exited the tunnel in a place called Yingpan Town.

This is another world. On the high mountains on both sides, there are green pines; in the mountain stream, a trickle rushes towards the Han River. The placard standing on the top of the mountain reads "One river of clear water will send to Beijing", which makes people feel warm. This trickle will soon merge into the Shuangjiang River and flow to Beijing, allowing me to drink the water of my hometown in a foreign place.

From Xi'an to Zhashui, the mountain road winds for 146 kilometers and has to cross two mountain ridges. Now the distance is only 64 kilometers, and it takes one hour to reach Zhashui County. I smiled and said to my friends in Zhashui: You can be included in Xi'an and become their suburb.

In the past, when crossing the Qinling Mountains, the mountains were high and the road was dangerous; now, there is a "shortcut to the south" when crossing the Qinling Mountains. People in Zhashui and Zhen'an are thinking about how foreign guests will come here to travel in the coming spring, the arrangements for food and accommodation, and the layout of scenic spots; they are thinking about how to develop mountainous areas and use the convenience of transportation to help Xi'an drive this impoverished mountainous area towards a well-off society. . A friend from Zhen'an County spoke with a local accent, which sounded a bit like Jingchu to me. I think this is due to the long-term obstacles in the Qinling Mountains. With the closer exchanges with Guanzhong, this Chu sound and Chu language will become more Guanzhong-like. A tunnel communicates not only the economy, but also the rapid exchange and integration of folk culture.

There was once a naughty saying that showed the hardship of people's lives in Zhashui and Zhen'an. That said: The mountains and rivers of the motherland are lovely, except for Zhashui Town. Why? Because of the mountains, inconvenient transportation and underdeveloped economy, the people have been in poverty for a long time. This shortcut and thoroughfare has changed the fate of the people in the mountainous areas and made this impoverished mountainous area more lovely.

Over the past 50 years, from hiking the Qinling Mountains to crossing the Qinling Mountains; today we are crossing the Qinling Mountains again. Life has changed in style and color, pushing us forward step by step, just like walking in the tunnel of time.

(Personal comment)

This essay by Mr. Lei Shuyan uses the method of comparing ancient and modern times to describe the historical changes in the traffic conditions in Qinling Mountains.

First of all, historical poems are used to cite the historical story of Li Bai and Han Yu when they traveled to the Qinling Mountains. The purpose is to illustrate the hardships and dangers of the Qinling Mountains and contrast with what follows.

Then he cites his own story of walking in the Qinling Mountains when he was a child, and uses his personal experience to tell readers that the road to the Qinling Mountains is difficult, giving readers a sense of reality and contrasting with what follows.

Finally, I write about what I saw, thought, and felt while traveling through the Qinling Mountains in the tunnels of contemporary society.

The success of this article lies in the author's use of contrasting techniques between ancient and modern times to describe the tremendous changes in transportation in the Qinling Mountains in the new era and to praise the great achievements of New China.

Language: The author quotes historical stories, poems, uses description, association and other techniques to describe the scenery and changes in the Qinling Mountains, making people feel as if they are personally there and giving them a sense of the history of the changes of the times.

Time is tight, the writing is not good, it’s ridiculous.
