As a laborer in China 73 years ago, Li Lishui's dictation is one of the most vivid teaching materials for later generations to understand the history of Shenyang allied prison camp in World War II.

After the July 7th Incident, Li Lishui's hometown, Shenxian County, Hebei Province, was occupied by Japanese troops.

"During the day, they rode horses to various villages to mop up, take whatever they saw, eat and use, and let go of everything. Li Lishui said that he couldn't live any longer, so he came to the northeast to find his father to make a living. Li Lishui's father went to Guangdong very early. 1938, Li Lishui came to Fengtian alone to find his father to make a living. In order to meet the needs of war, the Japanese army has continuously established various arsenals. Li Lishui and his father found jobs in Fengtian Arsenal. But soon, Li Lishui's father had to flee the factory to MKK because he offended the Japanese in the factory.

1942 In the spring, Li Lishui joined MKK and became an apprentice.

China workers are forbidden to contact prisoners of war.

In the factory, the slogan "Manila falls, our army will survive forever" is very eye-catching, and Li Lishui still remembers it today. It was the winter of 1942, and a large number of foreigners came to MKK under the supervision of Japanese military police and began to work with China laborers. There were 1000 foreigners at that time. Prisoners of war were assigned to work in various workshops. There are 300 people in Li Lishui's workshop, half of whom are prisoners of war. "In the beginning, prisoners of war lived in Peking University Camp, and the Japanese took prisoners of war from Peking University Camp every day and walked to the factory. Skilled people are arranged to engage in mechanical operation, while unskilled people do manual labor and loading and unloading. 」

1In June, 943, three American prisoners of war escaped with the help of China worker Gao Dechun, who was beaten by the Japanese and sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment. Since then, the Japanese army has strengthened the supervision of prisoners of war, and it is strictly forbidden for Chinese workers to have any contact with prisoners of war, even if it is a gesture. Both sides work in their respective areas and even use toilets separately. Soon, the Japanese army built a new "Fengtian Captive Shelter" in the eastern half of MKK. Since then, Li Lishui has seen Japanese soldiers and prisoners of war walk to the factory through a narrow passage surrounded by barbed wire every morning.

The Japanese don't provide food for prisoners of war.

In Li Lishui's impression, these foreign prisoners of war are very tall, but they are extremely thin and chronically malnourished. Work from 8 am to evening 17, and rest for 40 minutes at noon. They eat very little. Sorghum rice and vegetables are mixed together and packed in an aluminum can. This is their lunch. Because they often don't have enough to eat, prisoners of war sometimes secretly pick up peanuts and other things that fall out of China's labor lunch boxes to satisfy their hunger. In order to give up smoking addiction, prisoners of war also secretly picked up cigarette butts left on the ground by Chinese workers. Although the diet is poor, the prisoners of war do not forget to exercise. "Every time after lunch, some prisoners of war will leg press on the stool and stretch their backs." But later, their spirits became worse and worse, and their activities became less and less.

Li Lishui said that the Japanese never punish prisoners of war in front of China people, but it is common for prisoners of war to be punished. In addition to not letting them eat enough, the Japanese also let the prisoners of war stand outside in the cold in winter, and the dead prisoners of war will be carried out every three or four days.

Friendship between two cucumbers

No.266 is the number of American soldier Neil in the prison camp. He is the closest prisoner of war to where Li Lishui works. At that time, Li Lishui only remembered this number and didn't know the name of this American prisoner of war. No.266 smiles at him every time he sees him, and sometimes makes an OK gesture. Li Lishui was deeply impressed by this tall, long-faced American soldier.

One day, disciple Zhang Liancai told Li Lishui that he saw a vegetable farmer pulling vegetables into the canteen, and there were probably tomatoes in the car. They sneaked behind the vegetable cart, reached in and pulled out some slender cucumbers. At this time, Li Lishui suddenly found that someone seemed to be staring at himself. He turned his head and saw that it was No.266. Looking at the expectant eyes of No.266, Li Lishui took two cucumbers and threw them to him without thinking. No.266 got the message, immediately hid the cucumber under the workbench and nodded at Li Lishui. Li Lishui didn't expect that 266 would always be remembered. In September of the year when Japan surrendered, Li Lishui met No.266 near the factory. At that time, he was with several prisoners of war. After seeing Li Lishui, he kindly stepped forward to shake hands with him. He still remembers those two cucumbers. In order to express his gratitude, he excitedly stuffed Li Lishui with some chocolate candy and kept saying "OK".

In 2003, American veteran Neil sent a recent photo and a letter to Li Lishui through the family of another prisoner of war. In 2005, the State Council also awarded Li Lishui a commendation certificate in recognition of his humanity and courage in assisting American prisoners of war.
