IV. Totem worship

According to the Three Seas Classic, the valley of Chaoyang is called "Tianwu" by God for the sake of water. There is a similar record in Wild East longitude. According to the description in the book, it is a monster with eight heads, eight legs, eight tails and a human face and a tiger body. Its original body can be seen from the illustrations in Shan Hai Jing.

This is the totem ancestor of Wu people, an ancient primitive hunting clan. "Tian" means "big", and "Tian Wu" is the great Wu.

Wu people hunt for a living, and "the tiger is the king of all animals". Therefore, Wu people worship a tiger-like animal, which may have become rare and extinct in the pre-Qin period, so Wu people take danger as their totem, and the prototype of "Tianwu" is danger.

Wu people belong to the Yanhuang ethnic group. They originally lived in present-day Shanxi and Shaanxi, leaving many place names and mountain names named after Wu and Yu, such as Wu Shan and Yucheng. Around the time of Yanhuang, with the eastward expansion of Yandi clan and Huangdi tribe, Wu people were forced to move eastward on a large scale. By the time of Yaoshun, many branches of Wu people had moved to the Yangtze River Delta on the southeast coast. The "Tian Wu", a clan god who used to bless the children and grandchildren in hunting, has become a "water uncle" who protects the children and grandchildren of Wu people from being safe when dealing with rivers and lakes.
