A spell in fate

There are German and Latin, and now English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and other major languages in Western Europe are all transformed from Latin. Latin was the language of the Roman Empire. In the 2nd-4th century, the Roman Empire ruled most parts of Western Europe, including England, and all the languages here evolved from Latin. So now the main languages in western Europe, such as English, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese, are collectively called Latin.
